Hi guys, here they are:

Is Pennsoil Platinum a Group 4 synthetic or a 3? If so, how does one find this out?

Also, has anyone found out any specs on the BMW 5w30 syn, ie, who makes it, what are the specs, is it group 4 etc. I think is is Castrol but have not been able to get any product data on it.

Thank you!

There is a VOA of the BMW oil posted. I will have another of a current production run soon.
M060417A54 is the date code.

The bottle says it meets all ACAE requirements for A3/B3 and API SL/CF. Made in USA from foreign and domestic componets. I believe Castrol makes it for BMW.

I posted a OUA from my BMW 300Ci in May of 05.

That is correct. Castrol has a long standing contract with BMW to be their exclusive supplier of all first fill and service fill oils and fluids.

Any oil bottle with BMW has oil in it blended by Castrol.

And the last time I heard, the BMW dealer 5W30 was Group III. I don't follow BMW or BMW oil very closely, so that may have changed and I wouldn't have heard.

Sorry for being ignorant but is there an easy way to tell what group an oil is? Is this normally on the can somewhere or in the published data on the oils?

Thanks again.

TomJones76 - I did some forum searching and it is unanimous that all the BMW forums say the BMW Castrol 5w30 sold at dealerships is a group III oil. It is Castrol's Softec - if you do a search for that, you'll get information pages.

As for an easy way to tell what group an oil is - I think it is exactly the opposite... I have yet to find a way to tell

No, it's not usually listed on the oil container.

Some smart folks here on BITOG seem to be able to look at an oil's MSDS sheet and from it they are able to determine if it's a "true" synthetic or not. Not sure how they do this though.
