I think I was originally member #5 or #6, right behind Bob, Terry, Molakule, Patman, and maybe one more. A few numbers one way or the other does not make much difference.
After closing on my house in April 02 the wife and I discovered we still had a little dough in the bank and replaced her 207k mile corsica with a 92k mile 96 Saturn SL. A week later I started looking into better oil that doesn't burn off as quickly.
I also got hooked on Saturns then. I could swear I registered here then but am only in the 6 year club... had to post to see my stats.
I started to become oil "savvy" around 1996, when the dual gasoline/diesel ratings of everyday oil were changed so that automobile oil was "not suitable for use in diesel engines". For some time, I struggled to find a diesel rated 10W30 for my workplace Kubota tractor.
I stumbled on BITOG early on with a Yahoo (I think) search.
With the high quality of today's oils, the average Joe that follows the recommendations of his owner's manual is as well off as those of us who obsess about this stuff...IMO. They just don't have as much fun!

I think I was originally #409 ..but #402 is my current number.
Johnny, I might have been that "one more". By an accident of timing, when Bob went to the "new" site design way back when, I became member #2. Bob was #1. Hmm- guess I should look to see what my number is now, not that it matters. Update: I've gone from member #2 to #3. Hmm..looks like I need to make a lot more posts!
I don't know any of you other than a user name on my computer screen but I do feel a sense of sadness when it is posted that one of you are having health problems. Most of my friendships in life haven't lasted 7 years nor have I been in almost daily "contact" with my real-world friends as I have on this board. Best wishes to all.
It seems like a lifetime ago that I registered on this forum. I was originally interested only in technical discussions and arguing to kill time, but I eventually started to recognize that these anonymous usernames actually have real people attached to them. It took awhile.
I found oil to be interesting shortly after I started driving. It became much more interesting after learning some tribology and doing a few lab exercises involving motor oil in university. I had done plenty of thinking and a little reading about oil before finding BITOG (courtesy of my friend and classmate, cak446). It seemed like as good a subject as any to discuss while killing time in the computer lab one day.
