So I went to Lowe's to get some wood putty and a putty knife. I went to the self-checkout and after paying for my purchase (I was $3.64 and I paid with a $5) and reaching down for my change I noticed that there were already quite a few bills in the bill dispenser area. I glanced at it and think it was about $30. I could easily have scooped it up and taken it but I turned it in. The lady I gave it to said "Thank you for your honesty" and shoved it into a slot in the self-checkout machine. So... I guess I basically gave this money to Lowe's and now I'm wondering if I should have just taken it. Thoughts? Too honest for my own good?

Something like this happens to me from time to time. Most of my life-lessons have taught me that when I know it's wrong ..it will just evaporate anyway ..so ..you take the "feel good" part of being honest ..cast the "kick myself in the behind for being an honest fool" notions aside ..and move on knowing that you did your part in making a better world.

Good for you but my own experiences has been that, typically, it appears that others other than the money's owner ultimately retains that found but turned-in money.

Pondering the possibilities appears that if one took the money and gave it to a worthwhile charity that will actually put the money to work in a good cause rather than paying the HUGE salaries too many charities pay the elites within those charities that the "ultimate good" would possibly prevail.

Or, just keep it and buy a few homeless mentally ill folks wandering the streets a meal at the local scarf-n-barf.

Wandering Honolulu on liberty came across one of the mental cases. Had him follow me to the all-you-can-eat buffet. He was ragged but clean and didn't smell. Obviously not totally nuts but, while we ate and conversed I could determine his mind operated at a level beyond the norm.

The guy was appreciative, though. Manager of the buffet wasn't though I don't know why. I just returned the stares and glares of the manager as he kept a constant presence near our table. Wonder if that manager realized HE was the real bum!!!!!!! As I said, the guy was not dirty or loud or objectionable to me. Heck, his table manners were better than mine.

Never did ask him what oil filter he preferred but that was in my younger days and the choices were fewer in the lubrication aisle of retail establishments.

Cash is different than other possesions. I say that, but I've had dropped cash pointed out to me by others. Last time I remember distinctly...2 "rapper"-style guys noticed that while in line, I dropped $10 bucks or so and pointed it out to me in a friendly. People tend to look for nice things to do when it's easy. Me, I'd go back to the store and say "uhh...I left $30 in the bin".

i would have taken it. im one of those types which dont believe in karma so i wouldnt think the money would just evaporate into nothingness.
i also would not think of it as stealing because its not picking someones pocket. if money is laying in the bin for everyone to see i would have considered it ane xtreme example of "take a penny leave a penny".

perhaps you gents think of me as a bad person now, but im really not. i just live by a slightly different set of rules for society.
