After over a month of test drives, debate over new vs. used, and more test drives than I care to admit we finally pulled the trigger on a 2009 Flex SEL yesterday.

This is a vehicle for the wife and will generally be used for her to drive back and forth to work and for kid hauling and vacations. We were looking for something that was not a minivan (goodbye in the near future to the 2001 in my sig). We drove a couple of SUV/Crossovers and just absolutely fell in love with the Flex's. The only real requirement my wife had was it had to have black leather and an acceptable exterior color. My requirements were much more manly. I had to know that it had oil changes and had not been abused.

The biggest challenge we faced was the lack of decent low mileage Flex's with black leather. I test drove one that had a trailer hitch that I could tell had been used hard. The trans didn't shift quite right and that scared me away from it even though it was a Ford Certified Pre Owned vehicle. Another Certified Pre Owned was out of alignment and had the dreaded exhaust smell. So imho the Certified Pre Owned program is a marketing ploy and nothing else.

The 2009 that we chose has 45,000 miles and runs the exact same as the new ones that we drove. I made sure and showed up at the stealership without notice and did not allow the sales rep to start the car, let it warm up and then drive it around to us. Everytime I called about a used car they always wanted to know when I was coming in so they could have the car warm. This one had not been started in a few days and it was below 32 degrees when I turned the key. She started right up and had little to no valve noise and the engine purred like kitten. Within 10 minutes of test driving I knew this was a great vehicle, drove straight, stopped straight, shifted perfectly, and no exhaust fumes (a real problem in some Flex's). 5 hours after we walked into the dealership we finally drove off the lot. I tend to negotiate a bit more than average folks.

So now I am itching to work on the car

. This is my first ever vehicle with a trans drain plug!!! Yay! And the plugs will not be hard at all to service when we finally get her up to 75k. Oil filter location looks a little tough, but do-able.

The wife loves the Flex, easily the most comfortable driving position of any car we drove for both me (6'2" 200lbs and her 5'6" 120lbs). She also loves the ride, nice and smooth, very smooth shifting, almost no engine or road noise. And the toys! Bluetooth phone connectivity for her iphone or a direct line in if she so chooses to play music. A 6 disc changer (who uses CDs anymore?) answer: me. I always load a few favorites just in case other technology fails. The leather in the Flex is very high quality and the black has not faded or worn at all in this one or any of the others that we looked at which was very encouraging. Heated seats are just plain nice, never thought that I would want them but this winter has made me realize that my backside enjoys getting toasted when it is 20 degrees outside. A flip down DVD player between the front and middle rows should be entertaining for the kids. This one also came with the panoramic sun roof, pretty cool but totally unnecessary.

I think I found a good one and hope to report back on it in 10 years when she is approaching 175k.

Sounds great. If you look at enough , you know when you found the right one. What color is it? Dealer probably changed the oil and filter. You are go to go. A little early, but about the only thing to do would be a transmission fluid D&F. Nice upgrade from the '01 T&C.

Ptu failure is extremely rare, are the seals leaking or is it making noise?
Leaks are easy to repair. It is normal for the fluid to get extremely black and smelly, usually the input shaft seal leaks transmission fluid into the ptu which overfills it and causes oil to blow out the vent on top.

Congrats! Happy you took your time and found one without the exhaust problem. Oil changes/maintenance on that engine is very enjoyable as everything is easily reachable.

Enjoy!

Thanks all, it is a Silver FWD. One of the main criteria I had was no AWD since my wife doesn't drive in the snow, not that it ever snows much here. The oil was definetly changed at the dealer judging by the color, I will still change it out 3k from now just because I am itching to do it. The trans will be drained via the plug and refilled with the same amount that comes out with either Valvoline or Castrol (whichever I can get cheaper) Mercon V, on the first weekend day that it is over 50 degrees. I will continue to do trans drains and fills every 10k just because it is such cheap insurance.

I've always liked the look of the Flex and it does have the space to be a viable minivan replacement.
Kind of like an old school station wagon.
Sounds like you found a really good one which should serve you well for many years and miles.

Glad you got a good deal, come on over and visit us at fordflex.net to see what others like us are doing to their cars. I know you didn't want AWD, but be glad you didn't drive an ecoboost. The NA 3.5 to me is only adequate (my wife has one in her Taurus, can't imagine that in a car weighing 700lbs more). The twins make this car, well, fun.

I remember a friend being shocked by the prices of new ones. I hope you got a good, fair deal.
I always wanted to see a FLEX parked next to an old Checker wagon.
How's the ground clearance on those things?

Best of luck. Kira

Ground clearance isn't a problem, out driveway is pretty steep and I was very concerned about scraping while pulling in. It does just fine....actually seems better than the Town and Country.

Kira, we got it out the door for right around $19k. We were considering a new one for $33k. I did test drives in Raleigh NC, Rocky Mount NC, Hampton Va, Richmond VA, and we finally bought in northern VA. There were 2 used ones to look at on our list yesterday, we bought the first one we looked at. It was a pretty good deal but not great.

Lyle, the Flex has incredible power - 280 some HP? compared to the minivan my wife is used to around 170HP??. And we are both very conservative drivers so power was the least of our concerns. And yes, my wife and I have both been on fordflex.net, figure I will be getting a screen name there soon.

Interesting cars, but they seem kind of expensive new. I think that's held them back from taking their rightful place in the market. Their owners love them. I understand they are more comfortable than just about any other car.

Personally, I prefer the look of the Flex over the Edge.

congrats on going FWD over AWD too, more simplistic that way and slightly better on fuel and maint.

Personally, unless your doing some serious off-roading or mountain driving, I see little use for AWD. Nothing a good set of snows can't handle

The Flex is a cool vehicle. Factory chopped!

Probably the only thing against it is its mind numbing weight problem. You'll pay for that every day in fuel, tires, brakes, and wear and tear.

I have the 3.5 in my 2013 explorer, IMO it has plenty of power. What I have found is this engine really likes to rev to make power, once you get it up into the higher RPM's it has a surprising amount of power/torque. In the lower rev's it is a pretty tame engine.

If I'm not carful I can break the front tires lose at WOT on freeway on ramps doing a 20-60 pull.

It also has some pretty nasty torque steer at full throttle, if you ever "goose" your Flex just be prepared. The first time my wife gave our Explorer WOT she almost put it into a wall because she had never dealt with torque steer like that LOL.

I still wanted a Flex, never could find one like you that wasn't beat to heck and back in my area.

You got lucky though!

I have grown tired of driving more than an hour to look at cars these days. That is unless it is something really special.
