Im wondering if some oils are better than others for protecting the seals in an engine. I know some oils have better add packs for wear etc but does it make a difference for seals or is it just a matter of changing oil regularly?

If some oils are better than others what is it in the add pack that makes it better?

Reason Im asking, I have always used synethic oils like mobile1 and more recently PP with a good filter like bosch or wix and 7k interval. the more i read though, it seems like the supertech oil does a great job lubricating and should have no problem going 5-6k intervals. I don't want to switch to an oil like st if its not going to protect/condition the seals as good as a PP or m1 oil.

any thoughts?

What kind of vehicle? How many miles on it?

Super Tech is decent oil and is probably good for 5-6K in most vehicles. On the other hand, synthetics like M1 and PP are often good for 10K in many vehicles. If you're worried about seals, you could always go with a high mileage oil like Maxlife, which is actually a synthetic blend.

High Milage oils will sweal up your seals to decrease oil usage beside this and slight extra lubrication toward seals , they are the same as their non-HM counterparts

i have 4 different vehicles with varying mileage. non are leaky right now. the point is, i don't want to switch to an inferior oil and cause problems but i do like to save money

2007 honda fit 220k
2010 transit connect 75k
2003 astro cargo 90k
2003 honda cr-v 108k

all run good, oil comes out clean. I run a lot of miles every year, 3 are business and 1 personal. total mileage for all 4 vehicles averages probably 130k per year. its a lot of oil changes and if conventional st is $10 less for 5 qts, its tempting to save.

My 99 Taurus has developed a nice leak at the oil pan seal as well as around the crank pulley seal, specially with 20-grade oil. I'll run a couple of OCIs with Maxlife NextGen 5W30 just to see if this will help at all.

im not an oil snob. Money is the name of the game. The end goal is to get more miles with less money. I haven't really heard anything bad about st oil. If its just as good for a 6k oci, why not?

Nope, there's nothing wrong with the ST oil. It will do just fine for what you need it to do. I think there may be some better options though being that you are doing a lot of oil changes.

Look for sales on oil and buy several cases worth when you find a good deal on it. Often you can find name brand oil for 2 bucks or less per quart. That's less than ST.

Find somewhere that sells oil in larger quantities, like 5 gallon pails. In most cases, buying a larger quantity means you get a cheaper price.

If you're putting 30,000 miles a year on each vehicle then going to conventional will cost you more money(and time spent changing it out more frequently). If you switch to Mobil 1 EP you can safely go 10 - 12,000 miles on it. And if any of the cars use oil during the interval (which is likely) then you might get the full 15,000 miles safely out of the EP. Keep in mind that when you add a quart of oil to a 4 quart crankcase you are renewing 25% of it. That's quite a significant amount.

The difference in price between Super%ec high milage oil and Quaker State high milage (Defy) is close to a dollar a 5 L jug. Seems like a tiny bit of money for better oil. I have used Defy and it is good in high milage vehicles.

All engine oils contain seal conditioners, High Mileage oils just contain more of them.

Good point about modern current oils.

You maintain a fleet - stock up when oil is on sale. You should be able to run synthetic for less than dino supertech.

man...i wish i saw this before, thats a great link!!

Yep.
If money is the name of the game, you could have had a substantial stash of FAR Nextgen and a nice starter stash of FAR G-Oil built since you joined.
You just missed the last FAR deal on G-Oil, but the next is as sure to come as the next rainy day.
If you want cheap oil, you can't get any better than FAR.
You'll also find frequent closeout deals.
ST isn't all that great a deal compared to what you can find using the Product Rebates, etc forum.
