Schaeffer's #267

Well too bad it has the additive. I was looking for gear oil without it. I race my Camaro and use gear oil w/o the additive because makes the diff clutches lock up much harder.

vettenuts - my same question exactly. I was getting ready to use the Amsoil Series 2000 75W90 but Butch has convinced me to try the #267. Has anyone experienced the Amsoil and can provide any feedback and how it may relate to the #267?

Thanks, guys!

Hey Guys,
I've used the Amsoil synthetic 75-90 gear oil in many of my vehicles and have been very satisfied with it. Now that I have tried the Schaeffer's #267, I won't use any other brand again, I'm that pleased with it. Bob did a test on gear oils a while ago, but I don't have the link to it handy. Anybody remember the link to that test?
BTW Rob, #267 doesn't have the posi additive added, it doesn't need it! If you want the climbing gear lube, I think both Lakewood and Moroso both market it for both posi and non-posi. Expensive though, I saw it for $15 Qt..ouch!!

Larry, your Denali will take 2 qts in each diff, get a extra just to be safe.

I also have a GM 10-bolt 8.5/8.625" rear in my Silverado. You'll want ~2.125-2.25 quarts for the rear diff a little less for the front. IOW, 5 is enough for everything.

Can someone give me the lowdown on syntheic gear lube?Am I to believe that the 267 is better than Amsoil? I saw the way it seems to climb better.I plan to replace the lube on my 4x4 with synthetic soon.

You can mail order Schaeffer lubes from Tim Mills at the 800 number at the top of the page...he helps pay the bills that keep this forum on the air.

After reading this post I am going to return the BFL Racing Gear Lube I just bought and replace it with Schaeffer's #267. I have a slight gear whine in my 4:10's, with a little luck.....maybe this product will reduce the noise. Question: Do they also make a lubricant for the transmission?

Ken2, It's an stick, right now I have GM Synchromesh in it. It shifts pretty good, I have also used Red Line MTL and was very happy with it's results. I made a copy of the technical data for #204S Dexron III supreme for furture references. I would greatly appreciate a link for a manual transmission lubricant that will not hurt the synchro's. Thank you

Mola,

Just curious. What in the Shaeffer's 267 makes it better than the Amsoil lubes?

I believe it to have a better additive package.

My car requires a synthetic gear lubricant. I have looked at the tech sheet for 267 and the Amsoil. Most of the standards used are different so comparison is hard. High temperature capabilities are my primary interest.

Vettnuts,

I have been using the Amsoil gear lubes since 1978 and have had excellent results with them. I ran the same 80w-90 Amsoil gear lube for 11 years in my 1985 VW Jetta - approx 120k miles. I drained it in 1996 to try some of their newer 75w-90 stuff. The gear lube that drained out was perhaps one or two shades darker than when it went it. I also ran the same Amsoil gear lube for seven years in my 1976 Datsun 620 pickup with similar results.

An extremely durable product that will flow down to -50F and work very well in your Vette ....

I'd go with the Series 2000, 75w-90 in this application ...I've had it in my tacoma for the past eight years, about 60k miles, and it's doing very well. PAO based synthetic gear lubes have become the standard in diff/transmission use for OTR trucks, with a 500k change interval. the stuff used in the manual transmissions is a straight 50wt, CAT "TO-4" type product. Amsoil calls this their Powershift fluid ....

PAR...message for Par...
You can order Schaeffer 267 gear lube from Tim.
I have no idea who he is or where he is. I'm sure Bobistheoilguy knows. Anyway, his number is 1-800-737-1747. You don't have to talk directly to Tim. Just say you want to order the gear lube,it is very reasonably priced. A credit card will get you all you need.

Update on #267.
I have had the #267 in both the front and rear of my Sierra Denali with G80 locking rear for about 1200 miles now. Last week I started noticing a "Moaning" sound when taking slow speed sharp turns. After talking to Bob over ar Schaeffer's, we determined that sometimes you do need to add the posi friction modifier into the #267. I put it in over the weekend and the noise is now gone. Bob thinks its the super slick Moly not plating up on the Kelvar clutches, it only sticks to metal surfaces. So when all the original lube was diluted by the #267, it then needed the friction modifier.

Robz71lm7... I guess this answers your question for gear lube for your race car, you can use the #267 and not have any clutch slipage.

BTW, I still think #267 is the best lube!

Just replaced the both diff fluid yesterday. Observatios:
1)#267 is much darker than previously used lubes (Valvo,Penz,WM,Ams) kinda look like the original fill(don't know what it was - guessing straight 90 - 15k initial service);also similar in color to the 90 fill that the 4x4shop used after the r&p and locker install.
2)Rear seems to run just a bit smoother than the previous lube(Valvo blend - about 2 months old).
3)Seems that the rpm at highway speed is down just a tiny bit as well.

Planning to change lube at 6 months interval.
