The first numbers are from Valvoline Synpower 10w30 SJ last October. It is also in another thread. First oil fill and drain after AutoRx and Castrol 5w30 for 600 miles mixed highway and city driving over 4 months in hot Montgomery AL weather. Consumed 1/2 quart of oil. None added. Towed a trailer for 200 miles. 6,000 miles / 16,500 miles total. 2001 Camry V6.

Second numbers are Schaeffer Blend 5w30 SL Oct-Feb. 5,600 miles / 22,000 miles total. Mostly highway driving. Consumed about 1/2 quart of oil. None added. Added 6oz. of neutra 100 miles before oil change. I'm pretty sure this caused the oil to thin for the analysis (9.12).

Forgot to add....

For the Schaeffer Blend run....Used techron twice with twice the treat rate recommended on the bottle. Later, used Berryman B-12 chemtool.

Yes-very nice report. Since the Shaeffers was a 5W in cooler weather compared to the 10W for summer with the Synpower makes the comparison very valid.

My theory is since I had it in for only 100 miles it didn't have time to volatize off. 500 miles or more may thicken up the oil again.

Looks like the Schaeffers could have gone a good bit longer over the synpower. nice info !. Jjbula, did you have a Redline sample to compare with these, I thought I seen one from you in the past. If so could we see it posted along side these two samples ?.

I have never used Redline and all the samples I have taken are on this board.

The Valvoline synpower turned very dark the last 800-1000 miles of the run. The Schaeffers appeared to be lighter in color at oil change and turned color more slowly.

Yep, I'd call this one a tie. Lab error could account for more than the discrepancy between these two tests. In other words, you could send two samples of the SAME OIL and probably get more of a discrepancy in lab results.

The Schaeffer blend is obviously the better value between the two oils. $3 per quart versus about $5.

A few months ago there was a guy here on the board with a Viper and he was using Mobil 1 SS with really short (~2,000 mile) intervals. I said he'd probably get as good or better results with Schaeffer Supreme 7000 in 10W30. I feel even more comfortable with that statement.

Notice how the Moly on the BobZoil has dropped down to 63 ppm? Kind of similar to what my car did. I'd expect similar wear #'s, or probably a little improvement on the next Bobzoil interval of ~same mileage. I'd expect the moly to read higher next time. Yup, except for oil price, a dead heat. I suspect you're exactly right about the Neutra thinning the oil, also think it would "cook out" & oil thicken back up in another few hundred miles. Hmm...$2.98/qt, or $4.99/qt?

I forgot that I actually have this oil in my car right now ... along with just a little over half a pint of #132 E.P. additive. That additive is awfully thick when cold so I probably (partially) defeated the purpose of using a 5W30 synthetic blend in the winter.

I made a decision NOT to have a sample of this latest oil tested, however, as I am selling this car in mere weeks. I even screwed up the oil analysis a month ago on purpose by topping off the crankcase with about a quarter quart of a different oil.

Yes jjbula, after the initial "uptake" of moly, I would expect the next interval with this oil in your same car to have even better wear numbers.

Bror,

Regarding the 132. You probably increaed the 5W30 to just 6W30.

I used 4 oz. of 132 in M1 SS 10W30 this winter with no cold weather problems whatsoever. It went down to -6 F a couple of weeks ago and both vehicles, one a V8 and the other a 4, started upwithout any stater drag whatsover.

Really? Ya' think it went up by just that much? That stuff seems so incredibly thick ... and the car seem to turn over just a little harder on the mornings when it hit -20F.

Totally unscientific, I know. Maybe I was just noticing the difference between a dino blend (mostly Group I?) and the 5W30 100% synthetics (Mobil 1, Valvoline Synpower and most recently Red Line) I have used previously?

I gave this oil a good run (about 4,500 miles) and a test would be interesting but I'm not gonna do it. Last oil report from December was positive and that is what's going with the car to her new owner.

Using Pennzoil High Mileage 10W30 with the remaining #132 as a "send off" oil for this old girl.

Why are you going to a 5W? You are in KY and summer is coming. Just curius.

The main reason I'm going to 5w30 is to compare the 10w30 Schaeffer's in winter versus the 5w30 in summer. I know this sounds crazy but I don't think many of us on here are normal anyway. What we will do for the sake of knowledge.
