Soviets have used variants of the Proton for years - since the 1960's. I think Protons have been used for ISS related payloads, not sure though.

Hydrazine (monomethyl hydrazine) is somewhat nasty, but some of the best things in life are nasty. It's been a very sucessful liquid rocket propellent for 50+ years. I doubt the cause of this failure was "hydrazine".....
