I’ve been using Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5w30 in my 2023 traverse. I read today that it is a high saps oil and can crud up the intake valves.

If true, why would GM give it Dexos approval?

Should I switch to Mobil 1 ESP versions?

1. It's not high saps. It's mid to low.
2. Intake valve deposits will form regardless of oil.
3. There is little you can do to mitigate them other than maybe using a low Noack oil but that's not proven to do much in real world usage.

IVDs don't seem to create much a problem other than looking bad.

It's not high saps & keep a look out for the new Top Tier + fuel that will fully roll out in 2027 to help mitigate your deposits.

I've seen it at two different Costco's now.
Yep. Costco currently is the only officially approved TT+ gas. Despite stickers on a lot of BP pumps, it is very limited with TT+ and is not officially announced throughout their entire delivery system. Yet. However, no matter what gas is used, it won't touch IVD unless your engine is port injected. It is mostly to keep direct injection system and combustion chamber clean. And then, if you have IVD on a port injected engine, you probably have a more serious issue.

Best way to help mitigate IVD if at all possible, is to use a good oil with recommended certs and approvals, and make sure your breather system is working properly.

Walnut Blasting is your new friend for GDI/GDI Turbos. My Hyundai will be receiving its 1st walnut blast this coming up weekend ( I hope ) at 75,000 miles. I have "emission misfires" at idle as per my Xtool D7. That equates to micro idle misfire you can hear and feel in the car with stiff motor mounts. No misfires on load. Classic time to clean the intake ports/valves. DIY costs at least mine, $125-$135. Harbor Freight blaster/fine walnut media/Ebay Hyundai Gamma 2 3D printed vacuum adapter-blaster hole. Est. 4 to 6 hours for 1st time.

One of the Valvoline Restore and Protect promo videos indicated that it could help with valve deposits to some extent as it got carried to the valves in a mist, but I can't remember which one.

In other news, in port injection we trust :D

If an oil is ILSAC rated - it cannot be full-SAPS or Dexos1Gen3.

Your engine is GDI - that makes the intwke valves crud up, not the oil.
However, if you want to help with the carbon build l-up insidd your engine, just use Valvoline Restore and Protect + Yamalube Ring Free or Techron fuel system cleaner.
