I know. it's almost 2016, we should be in flying cars by now too. but, we will have to settle for a car that drives itself in the future.

Except that they force greater awareness when driving. I think they are beneficial to new drivers in that respect.

Manual transmission is a must teach imo. If my kid was 16 i would get him a 2003 vw tdi 5mt. 90hp, very safe, 40 to 50 mpg so he doesnt spend half a paycheck on fuel.

I would probably get him one at 14 to 15 and make him fix it up and make it his own.

Lol yeah he wouldn't spend half a paycheck on fuel, but will spend the whole paycheck on repairs.

Whatever you are looking for, id check edmunds.com and see what the reliability ratings say for the model and year. They collect reports on common problems for most vehicles. It helped me find my used car. If something has major engine or transmission problems, you might wanna know abead of time.

Not really. I remember not evening thinking much about shifting my parents vehicles(86 Cherokee, 87 4runner) much at all after driving for about 6 months. It became "automatic" and still ingrained when I drive my wife's MT wagons she has owned/owns.

Notice i said 2003 TDI, that means ALH engine. They are super reliable. If you fix anything that needs to be fixed they run very well for a very long time. Nick1994 had a BEW TDI, those are much more prone to failures.

Another big plus to Manual Trans is your kids friends can't drive them. They won't steal his keys and joy ride it, he won't be asked to loan it out. They will just look at it funny and not know why it has so many pedals.

Manual transmissions may be a thing of the pass but we fixed up a 1998 Chevy S-10 5 speed and I taught both the daughter and her twin brother first how to drive it. When kids want to drive they will get good with a manual transmission as with a manual turn signal. It was the son's daily driver for over a year.

Last month I added a 2006 Ford Five Hundred with 110K miles for $5K. After a hard 1600 mile trip over two days it seems to be a keeper. It being built on Volvo S80 first generation (1998-2006) chassis sold me on the safety and handling side. The Aisin Warner AWF21 six speed shifts fine and the Ford 3.0L V6 engine has good power and does not use oil.

These cars (2005-2007 Ford 500 2008-2009 Ford Taurus) can be be found in nice condition in the $5K-$7K price range. The handling and safety of a Volvo can be great for a new driver.
