I've used 15w40 in that engine (in summer, on a very high mileage unit) and it was fine. You could use the 10w30 HDEO from Spring to Fall, then maybe use a 5w30 HM blend like MaxLife in Winter?

Yeah, I tried that with my then father's car and current Winter Beater, a 99' Merc. Sable Duratec. I used PYB 5W-20 and it drank it like an alcoholic on free beer night. I think most are just better off sticking with the 5w30...
