Royalty Auto Service Cuts Open 9 Oil Filters from Different Brands

What part of not having a cutter that would work on that non standard long threaded boss end and they made do that you missed?
I did not miss anything.

What part of 10:10 did you miss when he says "it took me and Sherwood to pulling and twisting to get this apart, don't pay attention to the frayed Hengtst media"

He damaged a filter taking it apart and then goes on to represent himself as the expert.

He chose the specific VW filter and then didn't have the right tool for the job. He should have gotten the right tool, or put a hole in his, or used an oscillating saw, or a sawzall, or chose different filters to cut open entirely.

If he is working on your car and doesn't have the proper tool - then what does he do? Exactly.

Your lens of looking at it is different than mine then.

I will admit I am biased because a year ago he made a big complaint video (someone posted here) about how Napa tried to swap out his Wix Gold for Premium Guard filters. Oh the Horror! He should have just kept the PG and done his customers a solid.

I don't think its a very credible channel, at least regarding oil filters. Not sure why they keep making them - must get clicks. I guess we did get to see the insides of a bunch of filters. Better C&P's on this board daily nonetheless.

I wonder how much he marked up that box of Amazon sourced brake parts? :ROFLMAO:

says he isnt an expert
If one watched his two previous videos on Napa Gold filters changing to Premium Guard made, that became clear. Took two vids and in the end it was still less than clear what had happened. Unsurprisingly, most who frequent this sub forum already knew the details

He said the cutter wouldn't work on the correct end so he had to cut the top.
Because he chose the unique VW/Audi application, that's true. Otoh, my long time filter cutter, the made in Taiwan HF Exhaust Cut Off tool would have gotten it done.

I think these guys had their eyes opened when Napa dropped Wix and they had PG in the shop. It’s crazy how behind even shops are on filter quality and buyouts.
I'd bet 99 out of 100 mechanics and shops know nothing about the inner workings of a filter and what makes them good/bad and who manufacturers them.

My father recently retired from his own auto repair place. He had a parts company stock a few shelves with common consumables like oil filters, etc. Whatever they stocked (and that means whatever was cheapest at the time) was what he used in the shop.

I'm sure if you asked any mechanic in there you'd get the same answer...."meh, they are all the same". Maybe if you asked them which ones are best you'd get a few Mobil1 and K&N responses....only because they are more expensive at Autozone, Advance Auto, etc when they go to buy their own parts for their own OCI.

You might get one guy that just says "OEM", but without any real reason why.

I watched some of his other videos - impressed with the sheer numbers and how many makes/types of vehicles that business does on an annual basis …
A recent video he did was showing how to use a four-channel scope to look at grounds for finding anintermittent problem. I must say, I was surprised at his level of understanding, and embarrassed to admit I should have given him more credit, but now do.

YT videos pay pretty good if you have enough subscribers. Gotta pay the shop bills somehow! From the business side, he can probably write off, or take a whole new level of depreciation, on tools, and just perhaps... filters used in the video.

Could have been a customer brought them in and paid to have them installed? As a shop, he can charge the labor, but probably have a disclaimer about not warrantying anything more than installing them correctly. Many would just say no.

Abundantly clear to anyone reading your posts, like Hootbro. You clearly don’t like the royalty guy and are looking for any excuse to bash him and his vid.. oh noes, they had trouble pulling the media out of the can, they are clearly incompetent mechanics who can’t be trusted to work on anything..

The only videos I have seen are the filter ones people have posted here. I have no opinion beyond those. My comments are content specific - and accurate.

If you’re going to wear your fancy shirt and attempt to command authority in your fancy shop you should get the basics right. It’s not some dude in his driveway just sharing what he found which I would applaud. It’s a pro trying to monetize clicks.

He could have learned more reading here in less time than the length of his own video. Of course no clicks generated by actually learning the content.
