At first I thought you were referring to M1 EP and Fram Ultra filters, both guaranteed for 15k miles and both superbly high quality leading edge products.

But then I remembered that I saw MMO and Tearolator's at Walmart which must be what you're referring to when you talk about cheap and failing.

MMO needs to go in each tank of gas and reduces your oil change by a couple of thousand miles, down to about 3000 miles.

Which works out great if you pair it with a Tearolator because that too is only good for 3000 miles!

I figure if they're charging $10 a quart for their oil, they can afford to send one guy a free sample of assembly lube. RockAuto sends me free refrigerator magnets all the time. GearWrench sends me free tools.

You figure wrong.

Great choice of Tools though.

We know RP can't win. The API stuff is rebranded Valvoline with purple dye. The non-API stuff is useless because it meets no specifications. And it's all a ripoff because it's not part of the "people of Walmart" experience.

The majority of the people on BITOG want nothing but Walmart oils. This makes the topics for discussion here pretty boring to say the least.

Yes, because a few of them (mobil 1, penzoil platinum, castrol edge) are cheaper and arguably superior or at least just as good. And cheaper. And at least just as good.

Get the point?

And speaking from a consumer standpoint the big oil guys have a proven track record of quality. While royal purple and amsoil have gimmicks.

What gimmicks does Royal purple have? They have a proven track record, substantiated by customer feedback, UOAs and healthy engines since the oils inception. They claim that using their oil increases fuel economy, and if does. I'm not the only one who has reported increases in fuel economy. They claim it provides superior protection. It does. Phalanx tests prove time and time again Royal purple beats out the competition. There are no gimmicks with RP, just transparency to the consumer, great customer service and outstanding products.

So because some of their oils don't meet a certain specifications set by a third party entity that makes them useless? Nothing could be further from the truth.

I was being sarcastic. I have used RP in the past. I currently use it. I still have some in my garage, and I'll probably buy more in the future. As for doing research, if you checked my contributions in the oil change thread and the small engine oil change thread and the differential oil change thread over the years, you'd see my Audi got a significant amount of RP 0w-40, my snowblower uses RP 0w-40, and my G37 has their 75w-90 gear lube in the differential. The oil stash pic thread also has pictures of Royal Purple on my shelves.

I had thought my jab at Walmart would have made the matter clear. Additionally, I've piped up in almost every RP thread in recent history on BITOG defending the product.

I got your sarcasm Garak. Don't question yourself throughout the day.

The bearing test thing with the weights? It's all on you tube. They pour oil out of a mobil 1 bottle and it stops spinning on one weight but spins with all the weights with royal purple.

They used to claim hp gains as well. And they don't even manufacture any oil. Just blend a basestock that they purchase from a company like mobile.

I'm sure they have a good product. Just thier marketing is silly.

Then amsoil claims to have invented synthetic oil but use mobil basestock now. And thier whole saless process is way too involved.

Royal purple in a 5 quart jug is $34.99 at Walmart. Mobil 1, castrol edge, and pennzoil platinum 5 quart jugs are less than $25. And they make the basestocks oils like rp and amsoil use.

I'm sure they have fine products. But I have no reason to recommend or prefer any boutique oil over the big guys.

Oh well, he's built too low to the ground! I keep pitching 'em, he keeps missing 'em.

Justin251: As I've said many times, if RP was available at $34.99 a jug on our Walmart shelves every day of the week, they wouldn't be able to keep it in stock.

I don't know how you reached that conclusion. Based on the post your oil change thread and UOA section most people are dumping good oil early. Fram Ultra is probably the most recommended filter.

My app says $37.78 now.

And M1 is $26.97 or $28.97 for EP. Castrol Edge is on rollback for ~$23.

My 2 cents...

Most (and the most common) RP is just too similar to both Valvoline Synpower and even Napa Syn for me to justify the cost. There is no immediate item I can point to that makes it a big leap in the pricepoint. It is not a bad product, (quite decent) but is it worth the premium?

However, if you like chasing froghairs and have a big wallet, no harm will happen...

What's with the rabid defenders of RP? I've said repeatedly it's fine oil, nothing wrong with it. But implying it has magical properties that make it "better" than any other name brand synthetic is sheer fanboy enthusiasm.

I bought Edge this week for under 25 bucks for 5 quarts. It will work well and my trucks won't know the difference between that and M1 or any other major brand.

But my wallet will...

It's the same with redline and amzoil.

They are blended with unicorn tears.

+1

But you'll never convince people who are susceptible to brand loyalty to change their minds.

Brands specialize, spend heavily and succeed in creating emotional connections. Good luck with changing that emotional connection with anything but an alternative brand.

Bottom Line...

Nothing wrong with brand loyalty.

Nothing wrong with shopping for the best price.
