Anyone with a 5.4 notice start up rattle with a Royal Purple Filter?

The Truck has 14k on it for miles, and it did not rattle with a Amsoil Eao11 filter nor a Motorcraft Fl820S.

Any delay in building oil pressure? If it builds pressure instantly but still rattles, its not the filter.

You occasionally get a leaky ADBV on pretty much any filter brand- I've had at least one over the years on every brand I've tried. I haven't actually tried an RP filter but from what I've read I presume they're made by one of the Big 3 anyway (Champion Labs, Wix/Dana, or Purolator).

I would go with Purolator P1 next time around... It's capeable of OCI of 10k miles and it's also a lot cheaper. There's a lot more info thread on here about P1 than the RP filters. I've heard that the RP filters are made by Champion Labs, which is the same producer of Walmart SuperTech Filters and the Autozone STP brand filters.

... and Mobil 1 filters, and Motorcraft filters, and etc. etc. etc. Champion Labs makes most of the oil filters sold that aren't branded Wix, Purolator, or Fram. One exception is Napa Gold (made by Wix). In fact that's the only one I can think of right off...

I was really interested in the RP oil filter as I've heard they use a silicon ADBV, base end bypass, and a glass media filter. It seemed to be the best of all worlds on paper.

I had one on my 2006 Mazda3 2.3 for over 10 months, and almost 7.5k miles, with no issues whatsoever. When I changed the filter, the area around the gasket was as clean and oil free as I have ever seen......No seepage, no startup noise. It worked great for me.

Are they not the same construction as the Mobil 1 oil filter? Only with a true totally synthetic media, unlike Mobil 1's which is semi-synthetic. My wife just finished running 9,500 miles on Mobil 1 0W-20 with a Mobil 1 filter in her 2005 Explorer with the Modular 4.6. It always started quietly, no matter what the temp outside was. I'm going to send this used oil sample to Terry. I'll post the results.

They do. Champ makes the FoMoCo OEM assembly line filters ..but Purolator makes the OEM aftermarket filters.

No delays in building pressure. I think it maybe a leaking ADBV valve . As it is intermittent when it rattles.

I have an RP filter in an '05 F150 5.4L and have had no startup rattle nor delay in oil pressure (I have an external ISSPRO gauge).

Champ Labs makes the filters for RP.

If you contact RP, you may get them to send you a new one.

If intermittent, is it most often after still a long while? I assume you know about cam phaser and timing chain tensioner noise issue on the modulars, which could be an issue independent of the filter/ADBV.

I know about the cam phaser issue, I work at a Ford dealership in the parts dept. The guys in the shop also thought it might have been the filter as well. We have not seen an 09 or newer one in the shop with the cam phaser issue.

I just sent RP an email,so I wonder what they will say.

Hello,
I own a 2009 Ford F-150 w/5.4L engine and I gave one of your oil filters a try.I believe that it has a leaking ADBV valve as i have a rattle now on start-up.I do not have a delay in oil pressure and it is intermittent on the problem. The truck has 14K for miles and have had the guys out in the shop look at it and they also think there may be a problem with the oil filter. Would you like me to return this product to you for a refund? I purchased it from a Pepboys out of state as there is not a dealer in Kansas and it would be very cost prohibitive to send it back to them, or am i just out of luck and on my own to get this problem rectified?

Had the same thing happened to my 2002 V6 Camry using PR filter....I took it off right away and put on Fram Extended Guard. RP is the only filter that I have ever used that caused this problem...I think it's too restrictive.

I had intermittent noise with my last Fleetguard on my 5.4L. A switch to the Motorcraft filters completely eliminated it.

I have the Royal Purple 10-2808 filter on my TL and I also have the cold knock/rattle. The weather here in MA has been in the 80's so I am not thrilled that it does this, not that it should in the cold either.

Had M1-110 before this and it didn't do this. Will keep it on for the duration of the OCI and then change to either Honda or Mobil oil filter.

I am on the 3rd RP filter #20-820 in my 08 Ram w/ 5.7L HEMI. No noise using any of them in the dead of winter( NH so sub zero )nor now in summer( 80-90 ). For $15 there shouldn't be.

I have never had any noise either on any of the applications I have installed a Royal Purple filter on.
