Hello all.
I tryed the search function on here for Lucas additive, and it seems its not too popular here.
I have a 1990 Bronco 2 -w- a 2.9l V6.
Motor was rebuilt a year & 1/2 ago.
I have been using 10-40 Pennzoil as per the rebuilder's preference during the 1 year unlimited millage warranty.
A month ago (with about 11,000 miles on the rebuild) i decided to switch to RoyalPurple 10-40 synthetic as we have a local distributor here who gives me a good discount on this kinda thing.
I also added 1/2 quart of Lucas oil stabilizer as it claimes to build oil pressure, and 2.9l Fords dont seem to have much of that! LOL!

I guess my question is:
Is RoyalPurple really any good?
(I used to use Mobil-1 10-30, but hear that RP is better for these small Fords)

Also, is the Lucas additive really THAT bad?
Did i do the wrong thing by adding it?
(i had used the other 1/2 quart in a Topaz 4 cyl.)
Should i change oil a.s.a.p. to get it out of there or what?
(i plan on another change within a few weeks anyways.)

You would think there would be motors blowing left & right if the Lucas is that bad?

Sorry about the lack of knowledge, but i guess i'm a newb and need to learn!
Just hate to rebuild "old faithful" and put the wrong oil in there and have it go......

Thanks in advance!

Nothing wrong with royal Purple oil. It's been used for years by racers and by people using it in their every day vehicles.

I know a guy personally who uses it in his 10-second 460 powered Thunderbird. He takes the motor apart every season, and everything looks excellent each time he's freshened it up for the next racing season.

I am no fan of Royal Purple but if you are getting a good deal then go for it! It surely is not going to hurt anyting! I would not bother with the Lucas Oil Stabilizer! It is not going to kill the engine but it is not going to help it either!!! It usaly cause's some mild but noticeable increase in bearing and valvetrain wear as compared to just plain oil. A syntheic 10W40 should build all the pressure that engine should ever need. You would probably be just fine with a 10W30 truthfully but again a synthetic 10W40 is not going to hurt anything especialy with your climate.

Why would you pour Lucas into you engine when you are paying extra for a good oil? For six or seven bucks you can bet that RP is not hurting for an additive package that will do the job.

As a technician that worked for a Race Engine builder, you don't make horsepower pumping oil. As long as the film strength of the oil is good and the antiwear add's are in there who cares what the oil pressure is? We would deliberately make calculated bleeds in non essential areas to bleed off pressure to make power and win races. The oil was where it needed to be to provide "lubrication" yet the light was sometimes lit on the dash at the end of the race due to oil thinning from heat, but as manufacturers can tell you that is why the 0w oils were created to increase CAFE fuel standards in MPG by simple means.

You probably will not hurt anything by running this combination, but you would be better off just running 10W40 RP and no Lucas. I believe your oil will last longer and possibly your engine as well. I have one of these engines in a 90 ranger with 190k original hard-driven miles on it. I switched from 10W30 to 10W40 synthetic at about 150k miles. It maintains oil pressure much better on hot days towing ski boat to the lake. Engine uses about 1 quart every 2500 miles. Hope you have a real oil pressure guage as the factory ones are not so indicative of really what's going on. Hope this helps.

Umm, I think you're thinking of Xw-20 oils. "0W" oils are not necessarily thin oils created to increase CAFE fuel standards. A good example is Castrol Syntec 0w30 which is actually a very thick 30-weight oil and isn't even rated as an "Energy Conserving" oil.

Unless my engine's wear rate is dictating (I'd think unlikely), the viscous impacts of lucas additive is going to be around for several OCI's. I've been noting the drop in cold oil pressure over several OCI's since adding a little of such product thinking I might be helping...but be it a coldsnap tied in with the thickening properties of such a product, not yet having learned to drive gently while things are cold, and perhaps cleaning about the shaft seals, leaks started to develope. Summer time cooling may have also been effectted as it has seemed that the engine was tripping the cooling fan more often than before, efen though I have become less heavy footed yet reach like speeds, have flushed the system forwards and backwards thinking of possible clogged passage-ways, to eventually changing out the radiator due to signs of plastic end-tank fatigue while also reducing the number of grill slats in half. Perhaps traffic has increased leading to longer idle times at the lights and cool air currents, or maybe it has something to do with the coolant pump - I believe it has a stainless blade so that's thought unlikely, and belt slipping's impossible as it runs off the timing belt. Perhaps the coolant sensor is showing some age???

Me personally, I'd save the lucas for something else - perhaps to thicken a winter grade bar and chain lube for using in summer weather?

When I wrote about the pressure drop at cold start, I also meant to not a decrease in at-temp as well, though seeming to a lesser degree if my guage accuracy has anything going for it (AutoMeter - 2" electric w/analog display). Perhaps the sender's showing some faults (3yrs old and as installed the summer after using the lucas IIRC so I don't a "before" reference on normal oil pressure readings. Something like 25k of vehicle use over noted period with observing measured oil pressures.

I use Royal Purple in my mazda6i. It is the same block as the ford 2.3L. The engine loves it. Don't ruin RP with any additives like lucas. You will not gain anything.

I am going to switch to PP, though. Mainly because my budget has become insanely tight lately.
