The problem with alot of dogs now days is poor breeding. I have seen alot of poor examples of all breeds .I have seem awesome rotties .There are more poor ones though.

Go to a pound that keeps all the dogs in cages and walk down the hallway past them all.

See who barks loudest.

You want a dog that makes noise... whether (s)he's excited about going for a walk or because it wants to maul someone is hard to tell by the human ear. And you're going to have to live with the animal on a day-to-day basis.

I have a half-rottie half lab and he's a sweetheart. He's mellow, perhaps because he's old. He's big and does make noise when someone's in the driveway. I guess if I got one of those cliched leather collars with the diamond spikes he'd look intimidating to those who didn't know him personally.

Remember you're trying to prevent a break-in through intimidation, not maul random strangers when the leash slips away.

I would say pick a German Shepard.I had a Shepard mix a few years ago,he was a really good dog.

I tend to think that just the site of one has a tendancy to make an unwanted guest to have second thoughts.

Plus, they are used by police departments in k-9 units.

Well Thanks to all for the advice.
We found a local Rott rescue and have taken a 1 1/2 year old female. Very smart.Listens and gets along with old faithful. She had been in a Foster home with small children and other dogs and cats.
We were kind of sold on Rotts because of friends dog. She's has been very much as described and a lot better than I was expecting.

Had ourselves the pleasure of being owned by an Alaskan Malamute/Dalmatian mix - BEST dog bar-none. Fantastic personality, wonderful disposition - her bark, rather her howl and her looks made people think twice; little did they know she was an 85# licker!

I surely miss that ole girl, had her for 15yrs. Funny thing about that girl, she only barked 3-4 times her hole life, if something was wrong or out of place, the sound/tone of her howl told you all you needed to know.

She was a rescue, we were her 4th owners - nobody wanted her because she was unusual looking and wanted to go for walks, L..O...N...G walks.

At a friend's construction site, a contractor showed up early and pounded on the garage door for a while to get attention. He did not know that Brandy the Rottweiler was inside because she did not make a sound. Then he put his arm through the mail opening to release the door lock, big mistake. Brandy held him that way for a good while...just like Mechtech said. Grrr.

BTW- I would not put my dog into a situation verses punks, I wuv him too much. I can handle the punks. Grrr.

My vote is for Rotti, Shepard, or a Dobbi all awesome at being a good family companion and watch dog. Rule one: Make sure you get to see the parents and can approach and pet them. If either is mean don't even think about owning one of their pups. Make sure you take the dog to a reputable trainer or puppy school as they say. All three breads are strong willed and will if given the chance take over the house.
I have known people who have owned all three breeds with kids and the dogs were wonderful family members.
My girl friend has two Rotti's and they are great with her daughter. With me they are two glorified lap dogs literally. Give them a chance and both would be laying on me if I let them. When her daughter was younger 4 to 5 yrs old they would be with in 3 ft of me if I was playing with her. The male 125 lbs sleeps at the bottom of the steps and the female 100 lbs sleeps with my girl friend or in the daughters room with her. When I say sleeps with her I mean in bed with both of them. She sleeps with her head pointed at the door.
Malamutes are great family dogs with one fault. They don't bark unless it is really serious.
In other words it barks get the gun. They will if given the chance kill every living thing in the neighborhood. (birds squirrels, rabbits, ground hogs, cats, ect..)
They love kids and people in general. More threatening due to size, look and amount of hair than a barker or biter.
A large Labrador Retriever also makes a great watch dog and usually wonderful with kids again read my comment about parents and breeders.

I am not sure if it is earlier in this thread, or another one, but somebody reported being very happy with a 1 1/2 year old female Rott from a rescue. A rescue eliminates the pig in a poke any puppy is, plus a lot of work and expense. Check http://www.akc.org/breeds/rescue.cfm for a rescue near you. AKC has a ton of info on all their breeds on their site. If you do decide to go with a puppy, they can help you figure out the questions you need to ask. Whatever you do, don't buy a puppy from a pet store. They make used car lots look good.

Get a barking dog and a firearm.

410 shotguns make very good home defenders. Everyone from 10 years to 80 years can shoot them and they are very effective against humanoid targets.

I like any retriever for a guard dog. They have a mean bark but they are good with family/kids. Retrievers have the best disposition of all the breeds IMO.
