You ALWAYS want the punch to be softer than the steel in either the frame of the gun, or the pin you are driving it into. Hardened steel punches are responsible for marring up weapons, more than most anything else. Especially AR-15's where most everywhere you drive a roll pin into is Aluminum. Roll pins collapse when inserted. And because of that they are not difficult to drive.
