Me too. An era is passing. Godspeed and rest in peace Commander Carpenter.

I've been in Florida since the early 1950s and the space program has always been so intertwined with all of Florida...I've seen tons of the space shots go off from the cape. The first astronauts especially, including Scott Carpenter, always seemed bigger than life to me.

RIP.

Sad to see these guys go . As my dad said about the young fellows he saw lost during WW2 (and any war) we are losing the cream of the crop and we are seeing that now .

Godspeed Scott !

I knew of his stroke right away. My friend and co-worker "Steve" was very good friends with Scott Carpenter. His wife called Steve to give him the news. And that he was not going to recover. Sure enough, some time later, Scott died.

I never met him, but always heard stories about what a great guy and what a great American he was. We don't seem to make them like that anymore.

We DO make them like that, lots of them. I've been privileged enough to serve with many who have been just like him: brave, selfless, humble, driven men given to the service of their country and others.

Sadly, those kinds of people no longer appear in our headlines. It seems that we are more interested in morons, the self-indulgent, the crass, and the general trash that seem to be on "reality" television and in our popular press.
