I was returning an alternator to Rock Auto that was not needed after all. I got the RA return label and paid for it as a deduction from the invoice price. I put the alternator in the original packaging and box with the return label. I dropped it off at FedEx. I didn't see the credit card refund and checked. After hours on line/phone with FedEx it turns out the alternator was stolen from the box in Phoenix AZ, the actual destination city. Now I have to try to see if I can contact RA. They need to file the claim, I can't according to FedEx because of the return shipping label from them.

And... that's why it's better to buy parts with core charges at the local auto parts store. I'm all about saving money BUT time is money too and it's going to be a fight and struggle and huge waste of time dealing with FedEx and RockAuto's absolutely useless customer service.

I think you're all set though. Have rock auto refund you. It's their problem to get the money back from Fedex, but as far as you're concerned, you sent the package back to them and there's tracking to show that it's stolen. As it's their label, the money would go to them so they should just refund your credit card.

Thanks for the broken alternator

What does the tracking info say? Surely it got flagged with some kind of comment by now.

Yeah, but then we end up with an absolute piece of trash from Auto Zone or O'Reilly's.

As long as there is a tracking that say the item has entered Fedex system, that means it is out of your control.

Call RA, give them the tracking and ask them to call Fedex to confirm the loss.
RA and Fedex should take it from there.

Keep us updated.

It isn't. If you play your cards correctly, this can be handled by either RA, your CC or the shipping company. Even if I had to eat a loss periodically, I still come out far ahead (financially) by purchasing online.

also, Fedex is usually easy to deal with for claims under $100

RockAuto ships extensively with Fedex, primarily Ground, and I'll bet you money part of their contract in return to excellent shipping rates (doesn't mean RA passes them on to us) is an agreement of RA not filing claims for damaged or lost products. They may have a dollar amount set, of course, but say anything $100 or under, RA "eats" it.

They told you it was "stolen" or more likely what they'd say is "lost".

As others have said, contact RA and politely ask them when they're returning your core charge. DO NOT ACCEPT any push back from them about the missing item or what happened with the shipment/Fedex. If they mention it, remind them firmly that it's not your responsibility, not to mention Fedex has already told you there's nothing you can do. I mean, Amazon refunds your money as soon as UPS does the first scan on a return. How long does RA say they take to process a core charge refund ? Give them (5) days beyond whatever their policy says and even that's being generous ! Since the return destination was Phoenix and that's where the package last was, the clock starts when it reaches Phoenix.

Sounds like FedEx has your back on this one...tell RA what happened and they should credit you...or FedEx will.

You've fulfilled your obligation by packing it and shipping it back to RA with a RMA. The shipment has tracking as proof of shipping so RA should refund you the purchase price less return shipping and chase FedEx.

Not sure why everyone keeps referring to the returned alternator as a core.
