I sent an email to Sea Foam and got a response. Here it is for all to see.

{I have read that seafoam thins out oil when put in the crankcase. Is that true? If yes, what would the viscosity be of 6oz of seafoam in 4 quarts of 5w30}

Ben

Sea Foam will NOT thin your oil at all. Sea Foam will add lubricity or make the oil more slippery without changing the viscosity.

Hmm, sounds a little fishy. Seafoam has a viscosity and unless it is the same as the oil it is put in it will change the viscosity of the oil it is put in. Granted 6oz probably won't change it that much.

I'm sorry I just dont buy that. You should have said this reply will be on BITOG so dont [censored] me.

The MSDS doesnt show viscosity. The stuff is just Alcohol, Naphtha and Oil. Mainly 1/2 oil. Why would you put this in your CC unless it was sorely neglected and totally gummed up? - even then I prob wouldnt. I Would prefer kerosene.

The viscosity of kerosine and this stuff may be different by a factor of 2x, but they both are significantly different from oil.

Further proof that putting it in the crankcase is exactly not what should be done with it- the company doesn't have a clue about what it really does in there. Its a great penetrating/cleaning oil, not a lubricant additive.

Of course the viscosity is different, but it is such a small amount it is hardly noticeable. Would you be worried about 5 quarts of 10-30 with 6 oz of 5w-40?? FWIW I don't use ANY additives and firmly believe they are useless when proper maintenance is practiced.

Used seafoam in my bikes crankcase prior to the last oil change. Added it let the bike idle until warm then drained the oil. Cant say were or not it helped but its a 1980 yamaha with 20k on it and when I took the cam cover off to adjust the valve shims it looked pretty good.

That said I wouldn't leave it in there for too long. Been using it fairly regular in the fuel so it will be interesting to see how the carbs look when I tear them apart to adjust the needle.

X a dozen! Always scary when a company does not care about the tech info they distribute!
