Removing propane from gas line for new hot water heater.

I am replacing my propane water heater but have an issue with the gas line.

The gas line needs to be moved back by a few inches as well as up by half an inch to connect to the new heater.

The problem is that the 1/2" extension teeing off from the main gas line does not have a local valve to disconnect the propane, so replacing it requires purging propane out of the main line.

I will have to evacuate the propane from out outside regulator but do not know how to do this.

After turning off the propane tank, I presume I have to vent the propane to atmosphere, is there a procedure for this? Would I just remove the bolt on top of the regulator?

I'm leaning towards this as well. Apparently this is a gauge access port with a small orifice that can vent out from the low side.

I think you would be well advised to call a real plumber.

It worked, opened the gas line by the heater, only a little came out.

Yep. Pretty low pressure after regulator especially with valve off

Just shut the valve off and let the pilot burn out. No need to vent anything.
