For all you Americans, would this make a theoretical good "home defence" shotgun?

It strikes me as being maneuverable, relatively high capacity, and subsequently a good choice for home defence, if you live in an area with castle laws (and perhaps even ones that don't....)

Thoughts?

This is perfect for home defense. I like the ones with a pistol grip. You want a shorter barrel so you can maneuver it faster. 870's are the best shotgun ever made.

The price is excellent too, which was my thought.

Agree; I have one for ducks and upland, the thing just works never a problem, will work that way for as long as I live.

Tops when you look at price, quality and track record.

Best close up gun there is IMHO .

To quote a cop friend of mine :
the sound of a pump shotgun racking a round is very impressive .

Your link does not appear to be the same as the picture (lacks extended magazine).

But yeah an 870 is considered a very good "tactical" shotgun.

Correct, but if you read the link, they say that it is available in a 5 or 7 shot version, their image is of the 5-shot version, however I'd be considering the 7-shot, which is why I posted the pic of the 7-shot.

Ah, I missed that in the description, I would make sure because the SKU they have listed is for a 5 round, the 7 round is 25077 and the MSRP is ~$30.00 higher for the 7 round...

Nice piece for home defense. Very reliable and easy to handle.

Oh, and up there you might also be able to get a Norinco 97 Trench gun, which is a dead copy of a Winchester Model 1897 Trench Gun.

It is prettier to me, wish Winchester would make it again. The Norincos aren't bad (we can sometimes find them here, and I had the riot gun version at one time) if a bit agricultural in finish...

I might be mistaken, but I thought shotgun barrels had to over 18 inches, meaning an 18 inch barrel is illegal. The Mossberg catalog I recently looked at listed the short barrels at 18.5 inches.

I have a couple 870s, but for defensive use, give me a semi auto any day of the week.

Lower recoil, faster follow-up shots.

More expensive, yes, but good used ones abound.

Also, though a pump gun is mechanically reliable, when "user induced" malfunctions are counted, a good semi is far, far FAR more reliable.

The reason I bought a pump action shotgun was for the sound it makes when you ready it! Everyone knows that sound and its a universal warning. I would much rather somebody hear that and run off rather than keep coming and get to hear a loud boom!

From the link:

Quote:
Overview:
An ideal 12-gauge utility gun featuring an 18" fixed Cylinder choke barrel, single front bead sight, non-glare matte finish, and choice of 5-shot or 7-shot capacities. The Model 870 Express Synthetic is an excellent choice as a permanent camp shotgun or as the foundation for your own personalized design.

I'd call to make the order and ask for the 7-shot version

$30.00 isn't bad for the two extra rounds of capacity.

Agreed. And semi-autos are limited to 5-shot mags up here IIRC (which I may not be remembering correctly admittedly).

I've operated a pump-12 before and really enjoyed it. This gun's purpose would not be exclusively in respect to the topic of the thread, it would be used for recreational shooting as well. I'm sort of looking for something that could do dual-duty and the pump is priced right and sized right from what I can figure.

Goodness. How many times is this racking the slide scaring off perps stuff going to come up. If someone is in your house in the middle of the night the first thing they should hear is the bullet hitting their chest. Messing around hoping sounds are going to stop perps might get you killed.
