Same as others have now said - being a mother was just one of the many things she did, no need to make a fuss about it, and she really didn't like the commercialism. She has been gone 14 years, and so my wife has had to take over the task of telling me off for everything I do wrong. The MIL likes the fuss...but she doesn't want anyone to buy her anything, all the kids have to make her a gift.
