Redline's take on UOAs

I am waiting for Terry to chime in here, if anyone knows how to read UOA it is him

I live here near(Martinez, CA)where the Redline Company is located! I was very disappointed whenever I had first visited this Company! It was nothing but a small warehouse full of stacked boxes of Red Line oils! There wasn't any high tech equipment inside-nothing to support the testing of their product-nothing at all! I was expecting the Redline Company to look professional inside their plant(Like Amsoil, for example!)but it was just mostly a marketing type operation in appearance! It was just a "Hole in the wall" operation! Everyone that I had talked to didn't seem to know much of anything about their Red Line oils! This didn't give me much confidence in using Red Line synthetic oils-therefore, I picked Amsoil instead! Maybe Red Line oils are good oils-but, for me, I'd rather pick a synthetic oil from a more professinal looking Company! This is just my own opinion! Oil is a highly technical topic-and, I think that any good oil Company should be able to provide accurate technical answers regarding their oils to consumers!

Slick8, ever considered going into politics, sure you'd give Mr Bush a run.

Don't judge a book by its cover teacher.

Well, although I realize that Redline oils have a good reputation, I believe that consumers would like to get factual and professional answers, regarding anything technical that they might need(Or, want?)to know abour their oils! Vague answers just aren't good enough!

As for not judging a book by it's cover, I think that this is the whole reason that all of us are members of this Bitog Forum-to sort out all of the technical facts about oils-to enable us to more wisely choose the best oils to suit our individual needs! Just because a product is "Popular" doesn't always equate with it being the best to use!

Correct, they are based in Benicia. They used to have a facility in Martinez, which it sounds like slick8 visited, but according to the receptionist at Redline I just spoke with they haven't been there for several years.

Slick8

It is possible that Redline could warehouse their product at a different location than where they manufacture and test the oil. If you call or email them I'm sure they will be happy to answer any questions or concerns you have about their products. To my knowledge they have a very good reputation for a quality product, so they must be doing something right.

Sounds like you just ran into the distribution center. I saw one of Amsoils and it sounds identical to your Redline scenario.

Tooslick said RL has state of the art facilities. Sounds like you saw the warehouse.

slick8, if you think that Amsoil is a professional company with their pyramid marketing **, you should have your head examined.

noob:

Hey now! I realize that Amsoil's multi-level setup has its ups and downs, but they DO make quite a few good products and have been in business for decades. That doesn't sound like it represents someone who doesn't know their business, does it?
I'll grant you a certain percentage of their dealers have a lot to learn about oils, but they're still a lot more helpful than any kid I've ever gotten behind the counter at Autozone.

noob,

I think you mis read his post. What he had seen from his initial impression of redline is why he went with amsoil.

No, he went with Amsoil because of it's professional operation.

I have to agree with the wharehousing suggestion, the address I've seen for Redline is in a different California location.

Either way,for me there are too many racers that swear by Redline Oil, and it's not because they are sponsored by Redline either. I'm talking about racers that spend their hard earned money on the oil. Go to any big racing event and see how many racers run Redline Oil. I think it's more than any other brand of oil.

I think going "on site" and checking an operation is a perfectly valid way to gain some insight into a company.
If i went and checked out a bouteque oil providers Headquarters and found only a wherehouse with no apparent technical assets i would be asking some questions.
Its all to easy these days to hang out a shingle and spend some dollars on an advertising campaign and sell your company as cutting edge.
Not saying this is the case with Redline just pointing out that the smart consumer uses all the available info to hand to build a picture of an organisation.
I know here in Australia one independant oil company was started by an ex large oil company employee who simply sorced others base materials and bleneded his own product.
Not making a judgement either way on this but i would like to see their r&d department and technical assets before i used their product.
Ciao

Agree. That is the main reason why I find RL so interesting. It's reputation is as good as it gets. Even one of the Mobil techs praised RL the one time I called them. Said RL is an excellent product.

Just an FYI, Redline used to be out of Martinez (in what is now a tire shop) and moved to Benicia about 5 years ago. Their new location is located about 5 7 miles from the old one. BTW, the area where they are located is very close to several refineries including Shell, Chevron, and Tosco, which is where I assume their oils are actually blended.

Redline is a fine oil. Dave is a fine tech answer man.

This is the only part of the statement buster quoted him on that I agree with;

"these results can easily be misinterpreted."

He and Redline corporate are clueless about UOA usefulness over expensive bench and engine stand testing or teardown.

Guys if I am wrong about this why would those who use my services have the cleaner, better UOA's here with problems solved BEFORE they become catastrophic? Warranty claims honored out of warranty?

Molakule pointed out just one aspect of Dave's good intentioned ignorance showing. He is like many in the lube business, if the test was not done at SWRI,CalebBrett, and thousands spent , well heck I guess teardown and/or changing your oil every 2000 miles is the best way to go.

I don't think so.

Terry

Terry,

As someone who uses your service and the "cheap $20 useless UOAs"
rolleyes.gif
I will say that they are worth EVERY PENNY.

It's also a REASON why I DON'T use Redline. Their oils are expensive and put out more times than not bad UOAs.

I would hate UOAs too if I was Redline...

This board and YOU have made my thoughts of oil choice and OCIs safe and sound.

I'd rather spend the money for Terry and UOAs for trending than spend it for Syn and no UOAs...
