Hi guys,

I am looking for your suggestion as to what would be the best brand of synthetic oil to use on a Prius 2016. I have about 32 000 miles on it.

Thank you in advance!

It must be Pennzoil or Mobil1 or Quaker State or Supertech or Havoline or Chevron or Amsoil or Amazon.

I think everyone has a favorite. But as a Toyota I am dubious that it cares. I would just buy whatever is cheapest that says full synthetic and call it a day (as anything on the shelf should already meet spec). Two of my Toyota's run Supertech from Walmart (the third doesn't, yet) and after reading many many threads on it, I don't see how my plain jane Toyota's care one whit any which way.

I also own a 2016 Toyota Prius. Just like to give my input I have used Mobil 1 Full Synthetic 0W-20 and been aiming to drive very conservative with an average of 60mpg. I did a OCI and changed to Pennzoil Full Synthetic 0W-20 and there has been no notable difference in performance. The average MPG has been 62 but it's only a 2mpg difference which could be that I may be getting better at driving.
I do check the oil level religiously and no signs of oil burning.
Car currently has 26k miles

Please over look my ignorance . What model year did they get the capability to be charged via a cord / cable ? Were those models widely sold / produced ?

That is a separate model of the prius, not all of them have that ability. It's the PHEV (Plug in Hybrid Electric Vehicle) version. Started sometime in the third generation after 2010. They have a larger battery allowing you to run on only electric for something like 20 miles.

Use Toyota branded oil. It's very good quality (many oil analysis on this site to confirm it's quality) . Supposedly it's made by Mobil to Toyota specs. Having said this, don't over-think this. As long as it meets the oil specification in the owner's manual and you change the oil and filter it every 10k miles, you are providing the best protection for your Prius.

Any synthetic is fine for your Prius

Any Dexos Approved 0W-20 is fine. The most important part is to change it every 5K and not every 10K.

For some reason, the hybrids tend to be very prone to piston ring deposits and shorter oil changes seem to help prevent oil consumption from developing.

Okay - but I've got a 2010 generation 3 Prius with 176,000 miles on it that doesn't use oil in spite of those 10K OCIs.

Most of the ones I have seen have major consumption after 125K.

At 102k, my 2011 shows no sign of that defect so far.
Why some of them turn into guzzlers and some don't isn't clear. I've seen no real evidence that early oil changes are the whole secret to avoiding the problem. Change intervals may be one of several critical factors.

Any 0W-20/5W-20 will work in these. Prii do have a nasty habit of drinking oil when they get old, even though mine saw mostly PP and M1 with some PYB/QSGB and 5-6K OCIs, I'm drinking oil but I was able to get the consumption down to 1qt/4K.

If you Uber/Lyft in these, then I would suggest every 3K.
