and here is a pic of my truck, it had some heavy varnish build up. this is after using Kreen and MMO (separately of coarse). it cleaned up pretty quick

there is really no bad sm or sn rated oil out there...Pennzoil is a good motor oil i have used that oil most of my life up until about a year ago when the price shot up i now use oil we get in the drums usually conoco...
I will say Pennzoil ultra although expensive cleans really really well i mean really well!

yes, it seems the people of BITOG are a bunch of great people who cares for one another and is genuinely interested in helping ones who are clueless about vehicles, like myself, which is very nice to see.

did you get any pics yet? have you got your plan of attack ironed out? ready to get started? let us know what oil you choose to use with the MMO and when your doing the oil change. in other words..keep us updated!
Will do. next OC is Aug 3rd. Funny thing, with my Celica, is that the oil on the dipstick looks quite clean. It's light brown in color and can see thru it fine. It's not black or so dark that you can't see thru it. The dealership had changed the oil when I bought it over a month ago and I already have over 1600 miles on it. Maybe the engine isn't as full of gunk as I had originally thought. Still gonna change the oil on it come 8/3/11.

So I had the time to read up on the "Oil 101" here on BITOG and it answered a question that I've always wondered about. How long is motor oil good for in the bottle. After reading that, in extreme cold or hot, some chemicals in the oil may precipitate out and the properties of the additives in the oil is no longer good.
That's an "Doh!" because I have an un-open case of Synpower in my garage for about 3 yrs that's most likely no longer good? Should I even use the oil or just discard it?

The oil you have is still just fine. I've used oil twice that old with no problems.
Since the cost of oil has gone up so much and the good sales are no happening for the most part the oldest oil I have is around 3 years old and I would have no problems using it in a vehicle that can use it.

On the Celica I'd def check the PCV system. Then get some clean oil (or MMO) and a old tooth brush and work on the baffle (since very little oil will get splashed on it) till its clean. Don't worry about it going into the valve cover.
