I think the same happens at my local PepBoys. Every time I go there they have either none of this oil or at most 3 1-liter bottles.

Only once did they have a decent amount of Mobil-1 ESP oil. That was Black Friday 2010 when they had maybe 60 1-liter bottles. I got there when the store opened and was able to buy 24 1-liter bottles. That day all Mobil-1 was priced $4 per quart, and after a heated discussion they agreed to include the ESP in the sale (even though it is sold by the liter which is not equal to a quart).

End of rant.

I promise not to hoard M1 ESP.

Rebate oils? There, you're on your own.

The service bay department gets first dibs. Have them do your oil change.

Don't they offer rainchecks? After the sale ends they'll probably have plenty in stock and your raincheck should still be valid.

I think you're right. It's been like this for three weeks.

I'll ask. Too bad the Formula M is only 229.51. They always have TONS of that stuff.

This is why a small stash is best. It keeps your oils current and you won't get stuck with gallons of a grade that you no longer need and will be forced to blend to get a usable viscosity. I usually have enought for 1-2 changes per vehicle on hand so that I don't have to go to the store the day before to hopefully find what I want.

Thats what I do, keep a change or two for each vehicle. It just so happens I have six vehicles, but no more than two changes, thats it.....unless I can find it on sale.....then I stock up. Just cleaned Pepboys out last week.

I got that same deal in NY when a Strauss Store closed. I paid $1.97/qt, makes you wonder how much they mark up oil. I took all 6 cases.

Markup on oil is negative, it's actually a mark-down.

Quote:
One of my first jobs ever was as a salesman at an auto parts store, where I quickly learned which products had the highest profit margins. Management encouraged us to push these products.
Our top selling product in the store, however, was an item we sold below cost—motor oil. Despite this fact, motor oil was at the forefront of every ad we ran. At first, I was bewildered. Why were we pushing motor oil so hard if we lost money on every sale?
The answer was very simple. Motor oil is used by every auto parts store as a loss leader—a product that a retailer intentionally sells at a loss to draw more customers into the store.
Drawing customers through the store with "loss leaders"
Walk into just about any auto parts store and you notice that the motor oil is shelved in the very back of the store, typically next to the parts counter where the sales people can most effectively stalk their customers.
The reason for this is twofold. First, buying motor oil requires you to walk the longest path through the store to get to it. As you pass by all the other items on your long walk to and from the oil room, you may be inspired to do some impulse buying.
Secondly, it gives sales people a chance to swoop down on customers.

Not good for the kinds of cars that take Mobil 1 ESP.

We don't. This is still America. You can buy all the oil you can afford.
