Rant, eating out

Use to eat out. Then the wife developed a disease called Gastroparesis. Side effect of diabetes on some people. Kinda rare. She can't eat solid food, or any blended food. This disease stops you're stomach from digesting food. Basically, her stomach is dead now. She survives on vanilla protein shakes with some frozen strawberries mixed in a Nutribullet. I am fine, Our daughter is fine. But we can't stand the thought of going to a restaurant, and having her watch us eat real food. Feel terrible for her. So, now I drink protein shakes, but cheat here and there at home. Same for our daughter. Be grateful that all of you CAN go to a restaurant to eat. All of this just happened in 1 day. Been going on for 6 years now. Wherever we go, she must take this one particular brand of shake with her in a cooler bag. Be it a vacation, a day trip, whatever. The only cure is death by starvation. It's nicknamed " The Starvation Disease". She just turned 51.

We typically go out a few times a month, but try to cook mostly at home. I have a beef stew slow cooking right now. Generally the both of us feel like we are getting bland food of crazy prices. A couple of years ago we were in Greece on vacation. Food was almost always outstanding and cheap in comparison. We ate like kings. Came back here and went to Longhorn. Blah! it was gross and we paid twice the price!

But we have found exceptions. A small Italian place that is a bit of a drive has not disappointed. Outstanding food and good prices. We were there recently, I had a blackened tuna steak with rice and garlic spinach. It was excellent.

^^Pablo's point is well taken but I'm happy to report I've seen places where there was enough foot traffic to "keep the blood flowing".

The explosion of take-out food has added much more to the cost than people want to admit.
Also, I firmly believe many entities endeavored to make up their "Covid losses" overnight. How rapidly or fairly the economic reload occurs is up for anyone to review. However, I believe it's impossible to plan for a "return to normalcy", so some suppliers will gladly sit tight with their upward adjusted prices.
Hopefully a new kind of restaurant can develop.
Hopefully owners of vacant spaces will lower their rent rates before the neighborhood around it slips too far into poverty. <see my opening sentence.

Also, the vast increase in wet food and packaging waste has upped garbage, litter and vermin. Rats eat garbage. "Starve a Rat" campaigns pertain to garbage management.

My dentist has a sign matching that in most restaurants which reads "3% fee for credit cards". It'd be nice to know how the money flows, as in fsdork's post above, but I'll start with paying with cash of check when I can.

FAMILY NOTES:
1) Mrs. Kira's old fashioned mom always paid by cash at restaurants. Her stated theory was that long after you're finished with a meal, the bill comes. Better to eat and pay and be done with it.

2) In the '70's + '80's, my father worked in a neighborhood where a number of restaurants only took cash. We all were for that.
The credit card companies charged then too.
We dont have the issue here with surcharges on cards. Maybe because of the tourist environment. Restaurants are packed silly most times. I used to leave a tip in cash and sometimes I still will for exemplary service but that is becoming more rare but not unheard of. We never use cash and except for a recent boat repair never write checks but the bill would have been an extra $100 if we wanted to charge it. I actually had to hope I still had checks *LOL*

Anyway, cant turn down the free money from charge cards companies. Every meal we eat we get 5% back, if your a BoneFish grill member they throw you perks all the time on top of the 5% and at times I buy their Gift Cards that come with bonus cash. We go out to dinner as a rule once per week and more during holidays, much more during even stay at home vacations.
I have never ordered "take out" food (Uber Eats etc) except for a very rare once or twice a year pizza. We like getting out of the house and the dining experience and enjoy some local places as well as some national chains.

Anyway *LOL* the reason I am replying is for a long time now, dentists in our last state and current state do charge a 3% fee for using a CC.

Same way on our Costco credit card. Rebates from our travel are substantial.

I direct pay Verizon via bank routing also - I think they give me an extra $10 off a month. And a couple other places. However I feel that direct paying a publicly traded Fortune 500 company is more secure than swiping my card in some unknown terminal at a restaurant. Possibly I am deluding myself?
I totally agree whenever I do go out I always pay cash. I have friends that are always getting something weird on their credit cards and they use their credit cards for everything.

I don't put much faith in security with these small establishments.

I can understand but just remember. You never have to pay for something you did not charge on your charge card.
You can simply go on your account online and click if you see a charge you did not make and it's gone.

5 years ago pre-covid I could take my wife and two kids out at a local restaurant and be out of there for under $50, including a couple adult drinks. Now that my kids aren't eating off of the kids menu and prices have skyrocketed... the same meal is easily over $100.

My wife and I went to lunch at a local place this past week. She got a Chicken Caesar Wrap and I got a salad with grilled chicken. Two beers and a mixed drink for the wife and it was $90 after tip.

We don't go out as often as we used to anymore....

Wife and I went out to eat the other day at a new small mom and pop restaurant. Ordered two gyro sanwiches and waters. No sides, no dessert. Final bill after the credit card convenience fee and tip was $39.00.

We used to eat out a lot when we were younger and things were cheaper but we really backed off a few years ago after not finding value in it. Now we pretty much eat at home and take our lunches to work. The gyro place was a spontaneous decision as we were hungry and running a bunch of errands.

Anyone else cut out or severely limit eating out recently?
Yes I've cut way back on eating out. The high prices take the enjoyment out of it.

I don’t ever eat out anymore heck I don’t even eat the free lunch at work that’s provided monthly,it’s been years only special occasions birthday or vacation and that may only one meal a day. It all makes life so much easier as the cook I’m the only one to blame.

We have eaten out almost everyday of my life. I can’t think of any point in time when we have skipped more than a day. My parents don’t like eating at home. Personally I prefer to eat at home and have money for other things that I like. They always complain about how expensive it is but then keep doing it because neither one of them are great cooks but also because my dad said he hates eating at home. I’d rather eat at home to save money and also so I can relax in my own home and not take so long in a restaurant.

Learn to cook and save money. Lots of YouTube cooking videos.

I was looking at Olive Garden imitation recipes on YouTube.
