As far as the F150 being a Ranger replacement, Ive read that too, but I dont think anybody is buying it.
Yep, another neglected Ford that COULD have carried on as a very viable offering in the lineup.
It wasn't that long ago (11-12 years) when the Ranger handily outsold the Camry, not to mention all of its competitors. Too bad Ford didn't bother with any real updates during the past decade.
It's a great vehicle for many people that no longer has a suitable new replacement. All of the "mini" trucks are now fat gas hogs with full size prices.
If I HAD to buy a new truck, I probably would buy a basic F-150 XLT V6...an overweight, more portly version of what I have now. There, you win Ford. However, I am more likely to just buy a very clean, low mile, used Ranger than I am to buy a new F-150. The good thing is that these little trucks last a LONG time. My '02 with 105K miles and a couple wrecks under its belt is still an extremely reliable vehicle. I'd drive it across the country tomorrow if I needed to.
I think Ford may have lost some truck buyers permanently with this. My parents generally always buy brand new vehicles, and when they buy a pickup, it's going to be a Ranger. Dad doesn't want a full size, period. He also won't buy any GM pickup, so that knocks the Colorado out. All of the other trucks are larger than what he wants, and he hates the local Toyota dealer. Odds are if my dad really wants another pickup, it's going to be the cleanest, lowest mileage, used Ranger he can find.
