It seems most all of the Jeep Liberty owners have a problem of the power steering unit making a brief noise when starting up on cold mornings.

I'm thinking I want to switch mine over to synthetic fluid as a possible fix but I'm not sure on the best way to flush all the dino out of the rack and pinion unit. Should I just keep the reservior full and let it bleed out or what?

Supposedly Chrysler has a Technical Service Bulletin out on this.
The TSB reportedly calls for replacing the "Power Steering Fluid" in the vehicle with transmission fluid ATF+4.
I haven't had the problem on an '02 Liberty and haven't addressed it personally. I was low on fluid and added Valvoline synthetic power steering fluid.
The following is quoted from a Liberty Forum where this was discussed.

quote:

The noise you are talking about is coming from the power steering pump. A technical service bulletin was issued recently by DC that calls for replacing the factory fill power steering fluid with ATF+4. According to the TSB the factory fill fluid's cold viscosity causes the pump to "load" for a few seconds due to the thick nature of the fluid when cold. The ATF+4 is supposed to solve this problem due to it's ability to maintain a lower resistance to flow (lower cold viscosity) preventing the loading condition within the power steering pump.

Yeah the owners manual for my '04 calls for the +4 and it still does it. I figured I'd try a different type of fluid like Amsoil or Redline in there. Thanks...
