Questions that should remain answered...imo

WOW!!! I can't thank you all enough for your reply's! You have all given me quite a bit to chew on... I assumed there would be no 'perfect' answer to my question but I imagine that this is about as close as one could get with such a broad queery. I suppose the next step for 'me' would be to start getting specific...if no one minds that is.
I'll start with my ride ("my ride" is a cool way to say "my car") I recently purchased a '96 lincoln Mark VIII which comes with a quad cam 4.6 liter and puts out around 280hp @ the crank. Most of my driving is very short and slow runs in the city, which consequently is killing my mpg's, but I plan to start doing about a hundred miles of highway driving every week. I don't drive the car hard, in fact I drive like a grandpa most of the time (I'm 25 fyi) but every once in a while I literally feel a sensation that forces my foot to the floor. It's really quite strange and is quite a rarity as I am very concerned with engine longevity. If a ricey ever pulls up next to me though, which hasn't happened yet but is often envisioned in my mind, most concerns will be lost in the wine of my 4 cams. That pretty much sums up my driving habits, so on to what I'm looking for in an oil. I would like one that will allow me to take long runs on the beach and enjoy the sunset...I would really like extended OCI's, how long, I'm not that certain. I'm not sure how long any given oil will hold up but the longer the better. If I have to pay twice as much for twice the OCI then so be it. Even if I have to pay a bit more I'm willing to do this for the convenience factor. As I said before, I'm also very concerned with engine longevity. What I've read about the moly and boron additives really intrigued me. But I believe that I have come across some debate over the issues involving their use so any clarification would be very appreciated. One thing that I'm concerned with is what is the typical particle size that an oil filter does not alow to pass? It's probably different for all kinds but I think it's somewhere around 10 microns. I've read that most oil additives use particles larger than 10 microns and so effectively do little to nothing for your engine. The article on the main page says that superfine moly has a max particle size of 8 microns with a mean of 1.5, but it also says that "superfine" is super expensive. Is the moly that is used in the additives the superfine or is it larger? Also where do I buy the stuff?
My current plans, after perusing this forum, are to do two AutoRX treatment cycles using some supertech dyno and then filling up with what is suggested by all ye oil gurs.
I am also interested in doing an FP60/3000 treatment (not sure what the difference is between the two really) and would purchase and add the LC20 additive if you all thought it a prudent idea. Also, what gear oil do you recomend?
Last thought, what kind of business should I google in my area for doing a UOA?
Once again thank you so much for your help, I can't wait to hear what you guys have to say next!

conrad cliff,

I agree. This thread and subsequent posts are real good and I feel they should be stickied permanently for newbies or a seperate newb section should include posts by the many who contributed starting with Loudawg who showed a lot of love with his information and should be commended. You are lucky to get so many thoughts from thoughtfull minds. BITOG rules.

I think I should also send a thanks out to Loudawg, thanks a ton for all the details, I know it took some time.
Also, thanks for the compliment 06...

Welcome to the forum, Conrad Cliff. I have a 1998 Mark VIII LSC, I have been using Mobil 1 5w30 since I got the car but will be switching to Amsoil ASM 0w-20 next oil change. I think it is perfect for our engines as Ford backspeced all Mark VIII's 93-98 to 5w-20 oil. If your Mark hasn't seen synthetic oil before, use Auto-Rx and then the Amsoil flush and then switch to it.

Thanks for the reply, is there any specific benefit to doing a ARX flush and then a Amsoil flush instead of just to ARX's and also why did you choose the ASM over the TSO?
Thanks for your help!

You can do just the ARX but it would be better to do both in my opinion. I was thinking about the 0w-30 TSO but I plan on changing my Amsoil every 6-7k miles so I don't see a need for the 35k mile oil which is a bit more expensive. You can't go wrong with either. The ASL 5w30 would be a good choice as well. Even the XL 5w-20 and XL 5w30 would work very good for 5k oil changes.

Thanks again for the info, is there a specific advantage to using a cheaper oil but changing it more often as opposed to using a more expensive oil and changing less often? Do you feel that you'll be better protected that way? I wasn't planning on going the full 35k but I guess that only a uoa would determine if that would be acceptable in my case. Also, what factors went in to your decision to switch to Amsoil?
