I have a 2005 Honda Civic 1.7 with PP 5w-20 in there right now. I'm at about 5k on the oil and just checked it out. Now I've read around here that oil color really cannot distinguish whether the oil is good or not. I understand that even if the oil is black that doesn't mean its done. My question is in the 5k I've had it in there, the oil is between the amber color and black, like a brownish leading me to bleieve the oil is still pretty clean. Anyway, how does that sound and should I extend my OCI? The manual calls for 10k on normal service and that is on dino. I don't think I would run dino that long even on the manual recommendation, but for syn like PP?

Me, I'd use the oil NO LONGER than 7500 miles.
I used to change Mobil 1 FS every 5k.

it does, 5k for severe service. This was right before they put the OLM in the Honda's.

Belt driven Honda motor is NO PROBLEM with 10k on todays conventional.

Even with the evil CAFE 5w-20 conventional!

I'm sure that Honda wants their engines to fail before 100k.

Ok, more serious. You can run *any* 5w-20/5w30 SL/SM oil for 10,000 miles *if* your usage is not severe. Check the manual and see if your operation would be considered severe. If you are severe (most of us are) then a simple 5k run will be fine. Your engine will last with either syn or conventional, you'll just spend more $$ with one type of oil.

My dad had a 2001 Civic and once they replaced the motor @ 14k, it did fine. It just passed 150k with the new owner and no problems.

Take care, bill

Maybe a little more.
Not many go 10,000 on dino around here.

thank you, I may have confused people, I am running PP 5w20

my ex girlfriends acura rsx type s had 10K for intervals in the manual.

IMHO
what type of driving do you normally do? Highway, severe service. PP is pretty stout oil and 10K should not be out of the question either way

I would never run a dino oil 10,000 miles.
Heck, I do not run my synthetic oil over 7500 miles!!!

That is just me. Yes you can run a synthetic 10,000 miles(get UOA to confirm)

But

Nope, I would never nor tell someone to run dino oil 10,000 miles.

Honda does not seem to mind.

And they have the warranty the engine *if* something went wrong and even more important, RISK their reputation!

Ditto !!! that would be the the best opinion on what shape the oil is in. There are some maybe 1) 10,000 mile dino oil run in a Honda posted in the UOAs.

If you trust in all the claims about the benefits of syn oil why do you not trust the claim syn oil lasts longer?

I can't believe this still comes up as a question on here. Most any easily driven Honda engine and a decent synthetic oil is a perfect recipe for a 10K mile OCI. I have Civic with the 1.6 and (for about the fifth time) it is doing fine.

Yea, I am not saying it will compromise the integrity of the engine; Just that I personally would never do it.
My Idea of a extended OCI for dino is 5000 miles and synthetic 7500 miles.
I do not like worrying about how long is to long, so I opt for shorter intervals for my self.

I know some people follow my train of thought. It may not be the "norm" but it makes me happy.
