I think you’re right. I do like the 2019 Miata based on the reviews. If I had another garage I’d find an MR2.

I've got 190K on my S2K. Goes to the track regularly. See sustained 6K-9K regularly. No problems. Run a decent, name brand synthetic and you'll be fine. Honda doesn't even call for that. I run Red Line 10w30 in mine, but that's not necessary. Same in my NSX, which also sees sustained 5K-8.5K on track regularly. Honda was amazing back then.

If you have a AP1 the engine has a 3.4" bore with a stroke of 3.3"(almost square) and at 9000 rpm that gives you a very, very high piston speed. Its relatively long stroke of 84mm(3.3") results in a mean piston speed of 4965 ft/m which is higher than any other production car in that time period.
We have 144k miles on our '06 S and if we don't hit 8000 rpm at least once a day, well then my wife or I aren't driving it. We use 10/40 M1-HM and run it out to 7500 miles.

Miss my Laguna Blue AP2. Used to run M1 10W30 in regular flavor M1 or M1EP. I’d like to get another S2K. I’ll second the Redline recommendation.
