So I'm at work this morning and a new Purolator radio commercial comes on saying pretty much they're made in America and have been around forever. Seems like a desperate move to generate buzz and revenue. Maybe BITOG is having an effect on their bottom line?

Personally I don't think so. I have no evidence but I can't see a site putting to much hurt to the bottom line on the company.

To me they seem to want to be the next Fram Extra. When you look at thier pricing not much difference price and quality (for the most part) work hand and hand. My guess is they want to be a large distributer to oil change shops and Walmart/ quick lube shops.

When it come to theses places price is always the most important factor. Considering that and the ability to say or put a made in america sign in your window is only a added advantage.

you'd think they'd be doing better than ever, since they are now on WM shelves for less than OCODs, and the typical WM shopper only looks at the price tag..

I like Motorcrafts. Seem like the best of both worlds. Just took one out of service, will post pics once I find something to cut it open with.

doubtful, us few ocd oil changers wont have an affect on the bottom line of a company that big, not that I'm sure they even have an issue.

+1 on normal advertising.

Business 101: Advertising is one of the first things you cut if ends aren't being met.

We (this forum) represents about the 1-2% of consumers that try to be a little more informed about maintenance oils and filters. The vast majority of consumers just buy the cheapest oil filter on the shelf because "an oil filter is an oil filter". They don't care if it is a Fram, a Purolator, or a Chinese filter, they only care about price. So therefore, Purolator is likely doing just fine.

Case in point, Wal-Mart sells a TON of SF oil for 1988 cars and older, because it is the cheapest oil on the shelf. It is only FIVE CENTS cheaper than the SN Supertech oil, yet a large portion of the population are willing to buy obsolete oil for their cars to save the measly FIVE CENTS PER QUART!!

And those are the ones changing their oil in the WalMart parking lot WITHOUT a drain pan

I heard that same radio commercial a few weeks ago ... kind of surprised me since I have never heard anything from Purolator like that on the radio for years.

Obviously commercials are used to help increase sales, so it could be sales have slumped some due to the Purolator tearing issue. You'd be amazed how word spreads in today's "information society". I think word has spread way beyond this chat boards.

my distributor said many shops are concerned and he started to carry other filters. This tearing issue and also the wavy media is discussed everywhere not just here. It is mentioned numerous times on all the automotive blogs and is well known in the parts business also.
Im pretty sure they will improve sooner or later. In the meantime i won't take a chance with any of my newly rebuilt motors or even on my own cars.

They hurt their bottom line for sure in my opinion.

Don't underestimate BITOG's effect.

BITOG has a ripple effect on the marketplace.

Many other internet forums quote BITOG as gospel.

What has happened here on BITOG is direct marketing at its best.

The effort by a few here has galvanized the BITOG community to move away from the high value Purolator filter to an alternate high dollar filter.

Insiders here, sellout shills for company A, have been a good investment for Purolator's competition.

But there are a few well meaning zealots here that aren't getting company A payola.

It was also on a very popular channel in our area as well. Seems like they wanted to reach the folks that change their oil before the white stuff starts to fly. I think it's very good marketing on their part but with all the media tears that's been going on, I do think IMHO that their revenue has been slipping.

People moved on by themselves, for obvious reasons. Nobody here has held a gun to anyone's head and told them to stop using Purolators. People are smart enough to see reality and make decisions.

However, Reynold's better make some more aluminum foil ... LOL.

Realist. You're more of a shrill or zealot than most here.
