I used my last Purolator a year ago after cuting open a classic and found a torn media. i have been using Napa's. I ran a Pro Select for 7000 miles, cut it open and it looked good. No cold clanking with the "combo" valve. I am running a Napa Gold now and life is good.

I just took a Classic (L14477) off my car, but don't have any way of opening it (I'm not so much a shade-tree as a parking-lot-across-from-the-apt mechanic). Any volunteers w/ vise+pipe cutter I could mail it to for dissection?

Why is that?
Lots of threads here, they get stiff and leak. A Terrible design. Go with a wix or a napa gold if the unit you spec has a combo valve, IIRC the higher spec wix DONT use the combo.

Go with a Wix/Napa gold. Great filter with silicone adbv. Very strong filter media, I haven't seen any tears in Wix media to date.
Nice thick can also.

Sorry everyone. Was just experimenting with how to get a photo to appear instead of a link. Please disregard. I did finally get it to work thanks to several on this forum and help from my son. Really appreciate BITOG and its members.

Have you actually used one? I've been through a lot of filters testing and the best budget filter I've used was the Napa Silver with the combo valve (oh the horrors). It did not "get stiff and leak" and gave me fantastic starts at -10 too. A search will actually reveal similar comments from other actual users.

Napa Silvers are now my favorite budget filter however an awful lot of applications do NOT use the combo valve anyway for those who are afraid of them.

For sure. I don't really have a problem "trusting" Purolator, at least ongoing. After all, any manufacturer could have an issue. Wix could have something go sour for a run, too.

Of course, you never know how long such an issue might linger, depending upon how many filters one's favourite retailer actually goes through. For instance, the new Bosch Premium box up here is pretty darned rare, and the SM to SN rollout here took forever.

Yes, I used one for a Toyota application (1nzfe) and that's why I posted on the filter forum a while back about it including pics. My combo was stiff and not seating properly and I had non functioning ADV as a result. Maybe my part was on the NAPA stock shelf for a decade and it got oxidized/stiff. If what you get is working for you - go with it, but I wanted to caution other who may be unaware that SOME Napa silver use a combo ADBv/bypass and sometimes they don't work properly.

Fair enough I was curious if you were speaking from experience or just regurgitating internet blather, which as you know is all too common here.

Thanks!

I really like the idea of the wire backed media that the Wix XP and Fram Ultra have.

Seems that a filter like that could go 2, maybe even 3 years without worries as long as the miles don't get too close to 15k on it...
