I recently went to service my wifes Lincoln because of rough idling. I cleaned the MAF and thottle body, the intake inside the engine is filthy black, I ended up replacing the idle control valve, anyway the source of the problem seems to be ommiting from a Purolator air filter, I love Purolator and always have used them faithfully but this the last air filter I buy from them. It looks like it melted or diseingrated. Iam going to have my wife post the pictures, Iam going to call Purolator and complain, the filter was in service for 10,000 miles which isnt over due. I usually go 12,000 or a year. The paper is intact, but the black part that sealed aginst the airbox that is ussually shiny, is all crusty and disinergrated. I never cleaned the thottle body or MAF before so it wasnt a chemical reaction, Iam thinking I got a old filter, and I got it off the shelf at Advance, because i dont stockpile these, they are the big round ones and a bit pricy. I have a Napa in it now. I hope that black [censored] cleans itself out of the engine, I hate spraying cleaner down in the engine, I got the thottle body spotless.

If you think that you got an old filter, as you suggest, then it seems more likely that Advance or their supplier let you down and not Purolator. Could be that it sat in some warehouse for quite a while. Are there any date codes on the filter? NAPA is a great choice too.

You mean you bought used air filter? Didn't you notice it when you were putting it in? I always check everything I buy if I can open it. Recently I bought bunch of various filters at AAP and checked them all, they all seemd to be fine. Allthough I noticed dirty cabin filter sticking out of one of the boxes on the bottom shelf. Probably someone tried to pull a scam and got away with it.

I tried a Purolator PureOne air filter in my Explorer and I didn't like it. It looked like it was very well made, even having a couple strips of hot-melt glue holding the pleats straight, but the filtering media just seems too restrictive. Compared to a standard Wix paper filter, it even makes the intake quieter when at WOT. It didn't seem to have quite as much throttle response either, so I put it on the shelf and went back to a new Wix.

For giggles, I tried a K&N once too, and it made the intake honk so loud I couldn't stand it. I didn't notice any gain in power or anything either, so it sits on the shelf right next to the PureOne.

Shame on you for not checking any such purchase before you hit the cashier. Swapping stuff is a common problem. Check and if you find a swapped part walk out of the store after leaving the part on the counter for the manager. Also be sure you are not buying a 5 year old part. Do what ever you can to identify your purchase as the real thing. Do business at a place that has a lot of inventory turn over. Consider trying to get parts that are stored in the back away from customers. At one store I picked up a Mobil 1 oil filter to find a Fram in the box. I've also found the parts swapped within the same brand. Be careful.

I thought he meant his own shelf, not the shelf at the parts store.

If we're talking about me, than yes, my shelf. I wouldn't think of swapping parts into other boxes or even worse, returning used parts.

Some people are really pathetic individuals who do [censored] like that.

I bought a Purolator filter that was manufactured in 1998, I plan on putting it on my car next year. I'm not worried about any age issues, because my filter uses no gasket. It's all plastic with exception of the media. The media itself looks brand new still, nice and bright white. But in regards to what happened to your filter gasket, I have seen that happen before. I service a late 90's Kia Sephia and the air filter's gasket foam is starting to crumble a little bit. I'll probably have him replace it soon, but it's only starting a little bit on one corner, not affecting the airflow or seal yet.

I used to check every box when I sold parts for a living and I loved catching people with k&n filters in stp boxes because they went nuts when you asked about it.

I used to work in a parts store too, and if something like that happened to me, I wouldn't say anything, but just ring the filter up as a K&N and see what kind of reaction they give. If they throw a fit that it's only supposed to be $xxx, the price of the paper filter, I'd go to the shelf and get another new paper one for them. Problem solved.

Edit: I'm friends with the regional manager for AutoZone here, and I gave him a little heads-up that things like this were happening. He thanked me, and said he'd talk to the store managers and let them know to check air and oil filters that customers pick off the shelves themselves.
