This is off a 1996 Buick LeSabre, 3800 series II engine. 6 months and 2700 miles on filter. The car does mostly short trips of less than 10 miles, 5 days a week to work and back. On close inspection, filter looks good. No rips, tears, separation, etc. The end caps are firmly attached. All in all, I'm happy with it, which gives me peace of mind seeing some of the Purolators with tears.

The oil looks pretty "gritty" for only 2700 miles. Are you doing an engine clean-up?

+1 - yeah, looks like a lot more than 2700 OCI.

+1 - unless outside canister was dirty before it was cut. Also, how many miles did this car have before OP came into possession of it? Could be a little engine cleaning going on from previous neglect.

Looks like the oil is doing some cleaning there with all that grit. I had a 3800 that had been abused and it looked like charcoal inside. I would stick to a short interval such as this one to flush that garbage out. Glad to see the filter held up well though.

The outside was a little dirty, plus I used a dremel tool to cut it open, so I think a lot of what you are seeing is grit from cutting it open. Also the car had only about 11,000 miles on it when I got it. There is some varnish in the fill hole, but not too bad.

Another fine result from the Purolator classic. Looks like it caught and trapped lots of dirt and grit with no separation in the pleats. Purolator Classic is my old time friend and great bang for the buck.

I've seen this a lot in Buicks. Its the choice of retired people who don't leave the house much. They either own a Crown Vic, or a Buick. Lots of them rarely driven.

The question was asked, "How many miles on the car when I got it?" 11,000 when I got it in 1998 from my aunt. The car now has 153,500. Sorry for the confusion.

Yep, I inherited a 00 Buick Park Ave a couple of years ago with, of course, the 3800 sweet engine, when my Mom passed away. I drove it for a year, and was actually made fun of by some people, including my girlfriend at the time. White Buick, they expected me to be 75 years old driving it.

A 96 with ~11k original miles, very nice. One thing you want to be on the look out (bolo) for though, the intake manifold gaskets particularly the lower (LIM). 3800's of that era have gaskets that are known to fail because of their composition. You can google for more information, but the link is one right here on Bitog. https://bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=1825419

Looks like this Classic held up just fine and did it's job. For $3.27 (WM) and rated 97.5%@20um, in this case a solid value. Thanks for the pics.

Not 11K, 153K. Someone had asked how many miles when I got it. I got it in '98 with 11K on it. It now has 153K. I have had the upper and lower intake manifolds replaced. They were done at 142K.

Oh ok, got it! Sound like you have maintained the vehicle.

Curious, 142K for manifold gaskets not bad. Did you notice a leak or just replaced them as maintenance?

I noticed moisture in the fill hole. I sent a UOA to Blackstone which confirmed a coolant leak. I then did some research and found a bunch of stuff about the intake leaks on the 3800 motors. Everything looks good now.
