hey guys is anybody else besides me getting worried about all these media tears in these filters lately? I have used puro classics and motorcrafts but I needed to change oil today so I did something I aint done in years, I put a fram toughguard tg3600 on my truck today. I have heard lots of good reviews on these filters. I guess tomorrow morning I will find out if I have any rattle or not. the fl400s never caused rattle. I used a wix one time and it did cause rattle. if I don't hear any rattle I will leave it on for 4 or 5000 miles and cut it open and see how it looks. to be honest I haven't seen a lot of fram failures on this sight, just the normal people bashing of the cardboard endcaps. so I guess my main question is do you guys think this filter will be ok if theres no rattle? thanks for replies

The evidence presented here probably isn't enough to say for certain they are any worse than they have been in the past, or that they have any more failures than other brands. I do find it persuasive enough though that I am switching to Fram, Wix, or the Wix made house brands.

That bit of mileage I would not think it would hurt to run it Just my 2 cents . Welcome from MTA I see born in WS here

Why not go with the FL400 Motorcraft again? Just because they are made by Purolator doesn't mean they are the same as Purolator. Never seen any reported failures on Motorcraft filters here.

Well I do have a tear, it was hard to see but it is there. I posted another pic of the filter in the Purolator classic thread. This is a Pure 1 from a GM LS4 V8 5w30 Chevron. I took another pic and zoomed in where I thought the pleat had separated from the glue. Last Purolator for me.

Thanks for the update sprite! I would speculate that was gonna get worse with continued use.

OP, here is a pic (on the left) of a Tough Guard TG3600 I ran on my Jeep about 4k. Tough Guards are one of the few filters that give me quiet starts in my Jeep, I'd be surprised if you get any start up rattle out of yours.

The minor end cap damage you can see was from my opening it. The Tough Guard is well regarded here by many and Fram rates it for 10k OCI's. Use for your purposes with confidence IMO. I have another TG on my Jeep now which I intend to run 7k.

TGs have become my go to filter for many applications. Hard to beat the features for the price and ease of availability.

When Purolator changed from premium plus to classic, they cheapened them. I still got a virgin premium plus cut open and their is definately more media in those than the newer classics.I would post a pic but haven't been sucessful in the past doing this. The old phrase "nothing is built like it used to" sure applies here.Back in the 70's, even the Fram orange cans were decent filters.

I'd for one would like to see those. I'll be happy to post them for you if you want to email them to me. If interested I'll PM you an email address to send them to.

Me too!

Well I sure hope their not cutting corners. I just picked 5 Pure Ones and four Classics for $26 at a Kmart going out of business sale. Not as grand a haul as some on here but I was happy. Still trying to find an angle on some cheap oil, price wise not quality wise..

Looks like Frams argument that fiber end caps have sufficient integrity is coming true. I always thought it made sense that the join would be easier to make and hold. Looks like it could be a superior design.

hey guys thanks for the responses. well I didn't have any rattle this morning but it was only mid 30's. that pic of the tg and eg look like identical filters except for the adbv!!! they both also look like the media is longer than the fl400 too! im thinking I may have a new go to filter now, especially if I cut it open and it looks good after about 4 or 5000 miles, and around here its only a couple bucks more than the 400. all these Purolator media tears may be the best thing that could happen for fram, lol, because it looks like a lot of them are showing up. I haven't been on her long, has there been any posts here showing fram media tears? thanks for the responses.

just now looked at a fl500 pic of the bypass end cap not even attached!!!!! man they coming out from everywhere. really looking bad on Purolator!!!

Here's the thread I recently posted with those pics, it explains some of the differences between orange can and silver can Frams. Basically the TG has more media and it is a higher efficiency (99%) synthetic blend with a silicone ADBV, but you're right the basic construction style is the same.

Fram 3600's cut open

I have seen some Frams that looked not that impressive as well, in most cases the filter was probably pushed beyond its intended use limit. I don't remember ever seeing a hole in one though. While I do wish Fram would use more media, especially on the orange cans, the media they do use does seem to be very strong. Probably why they can get away with less of it.

Would most consider the Pure One to not be a cheaply made filter subject to tearing of media as the Classic ?
