Pureone 22500 cut open

Purolator Pureone PL22500 from wifes 2012 Ford Escape. Filter in use for 5k miles and 34k miles on the vehicle. Can was structurally in good shape. ADBV still ridiculously pliable. All pleats were intact and no tears or excessive "wavy" media found. I dont know when it was constructed and I would appreciate it if someone could decode the # below. Enjoy!

Thanks for the manufacture info! There is a chart floating around here for decoding Puro dates I need to track down and paste on my computer.

Looks excellent. Thinking also a clean engine and based on date of manufacture, March of this year, a fair amount of highway miles. Imo, definitely easier on filter media.

I always change the oil and filter at the same time. I was using Walmart RP 5w20. OLM said 51%. I changed it at 5k to go with a different filter that I could run for more than 5k miles or so. I sent a sample off to blackstone, but Im going to start using synthetic filters with the RP and try my hand at extended OCIs. When I was pouring the used oil into the jug, it was still transluscent. It didn't look that dirty whatsoever. I probably could have saved it and ran it again.

What filter did you replace this PureOne with?

It's a shame -- this PureOne looks like it could go a lot longer than 5k and based on your description, the oil could too. RP's expensive!

I will only run the Classics 3k and the Pureones 5k, just so that I dont run the risk of filter failure. So far it is working as I have never had a filter tear on me yet! I replaced it with a Royal Purple 20-500 filter. Which is giving me some noise on cold startups currently and may or may not stay on there much longer.

If I replace it, I will use a Fram Ultra or Purolator Synthetic. Not sure yet.

The Bosch Distance Plus is another option to consider.

It lets you stay in the Purolator fold.

According to the advertising, it holds more dirt.

What people are labeling as "Puro-haters" are actually long time Purolator fans and users (me included - just look at past postings since I joined in 2010) that are now disappointing in the failure issue, and also disappointed in how Purolator has responded to the issue. They want to use Purolators, but are moving on to something that doesn't have a high chance of failing. A natural response IMO.

Purolators are still good filters, there is just some hysteria sweeping the site because of some failures. My filter was made in March of this year and no tears. Not even any pleats that were close to tearing. Perhaps there was a problem and they solved it, or the problem was not as wide spread as some would have us believe?

^^^ Its' possible the newer made Purolators will not show any signs of reported tears. If newer made filters like this one don't show failures, then maybe Purolator has listened to the members here. I found a tear just like all these reported ones in the last 4 months back in May 2011 and let Purolator know at the time. So time will tell if they've really fixed this now or not.

IMO, the tearing issue was wide spread. How could it be that only BITOG members who decided to cut open filter were the only ones it was happening to? Astronomical odds of that happening, so you can bet it was happening everywhere ... not just here.

Yes, the fad is Fram Ultra now, who knows what the new fad will be next. Currently there is an anti purolator hysteria. Man-made.
