PU Consumption

So, what oil you use now and how much consumption?

I'm thinking maybe an oil flush before changing to a radically different oil is not a bad idea after all?

FWIW, I never saw this in any engine even using syn oils that really were PAO, and switching brands all the time.
I don't think that synthetics clean any better than do high calcium/sodium conventional oils.
I think that they simply do a better job of preventing any deposit accumulation.
My first use of synthetic oil was around 1990, using Slick 50 branded PAO 10W-30. The car, an '86 Civic Wagovan had been run for 3K intervals on conventional oil prior to that, up to about 90K.
I bought a couple of changes of the Slick 50 brand oil from what was then Odd Lots for cheap, and ran the car on various synthetics ever after to 200K+.
Never saw any change in consumption using any oil.
The engine never used enough oil in an OCI to need any adds.
Something clearly happened to this engine, and I don't think it was the Ultra.

I am still using PU. I had bought two jugs (because I had a coupon). So far I have put 600mi on it and haven't had to add anything, even after a 400mi freeway road trip. So I'll just keep an eye on it as I have been and see what happens this time. I will keep updating as warranted. Thanks for the help and ideas everyone.

Your consumption could be due to a couple of reasons , the switch in chemistry to PU and PU cleaning more of the engine out. When you perform your next oil change , cut the filter open to determine if there is alot of junk in the filter.

Makes sense. Your engines were in good shape, no deposits prior to the switch so you didn't experience it. I knew a few that tried the switch, consumption persisted till they switched back to dino. I bet they weren't telling the whole story, that they had been neglecting oil changes prior, had deposits. And with the cleaning additives in that era, it would not resolve itself. Once you got deposits it was hard to get rid of no matter what oil was used. Hello MMO, what I used back then. No forums like this to share experiences left only word of mouth blaming the oil.

That, too, makes sense. I had always been hesitant to use a synthetic anyhow in an engine that was questionable at all, particularly with respect to leaks or consumption. My worry has never been that synthetics would leak more, but top up at $7 a litre is worse than top up at $3.50 a litre.

I ran into the same issue with PU. I did an oil change on my 2010 5.4L F150 at 25K miles. Did my next oil change at 31K and found the truck was two quarts low. I refilled with Mobil One. Just checked the oil level and after 5K miles I might be down 1/2 quart. The truck is not run hard with mileage 70/30 highway to in town driving. The truck has always had 5W20 Synthetic. Never been a fan of Pennzoil, and this just confirmed my opinion.

Same thing happened to me. Last change I went to PU. The car usually uses about 1/4 quart between changes (8K miles) but has already gone through one quart in 3500.

We run whatever synth is on sale in our fleet and change by the OLM. I have used PP but cannot ever even find PU!

I guess we'll never know...

I had a similar issue with Edge 5W30, I used half a qt during my interval, when I would never use any measurable amount of oil. The second round with it I had no problems. OTOH PP 5W30 in the same vehicle remained full for the entire interval. If you like the oil give it another try, it can take a few OCI's before things go back to normal. OTOH you might continue to use oil, and switching brands might help.

I had the opposite experience with mobil 1. It has been said that switching brands may lead to some consumption at first but it usually sorts itself out.
Just monitor the oil level. Consumption will likely lessen as time goes on.

Thanks for updating. I had a similar issue when I tried Mobil 1 in a older Chevy that had never had anything but dino. It gobbled the stuff like mad at first then slowed way down also.
