Your probably right.

I don't think that synthetics clean any better than do high calcium/sodium conventional oils.
I think that they simply do a better job of preventing any deposit accumulation.
My first use of synthetic oil was around 1990, using Slick 50 branded PAO 10W-30. The car, an '86 Civic Wagovan had been run for 3K intervals on conventional oil prior to that, up to about 90K.
I bought a couple of changes of the Slick 50 brand oil from what was then Odd Lots for cheap, and ran the car on various synthetics ever after to 200K+.
Never saw any change in consumption using any oil.
The engine never used enough oil in an OCI to need any adds.
Something clearly happened to this engine, and I don't think it was the Ultra.
Makes sense. Your engines were in good shape, no deposits prior to the switch so you didn't experience it. I knew a few that tried the switch, consumption persisted till they switched back to dino. I bet they weren't telling the whole story, that they had been neglecting oil changes prior, had deposits. And with the cleaning additives in that era, it would not resolve itself. Once you got deposits it was hard to get rid of no matter what oil was used. Hello MMO, what I used back then. No forums like this to share experiences left only word of mouth blaming the oil.
