Property Taxes

I will add my $7000 per year property tax on a $500k property is great by me. Three kids are going to top 10 school in state of NH for $7k not a complaint. Lastly our crime is low, community really nice and feel safe. So many parents waste thousands of dollars on private schooling instead of simply picking a place to live in a better community with focus on top tier schools. Selling our home when kids leave will be easier due to excellent schools our taxes pay for.

Just a counterpoint to all the moaning on taxes.

Assessor screwed up last year and bumped almost everybody's assessment up 50k. They all fought it and won, and now this year those same homes are selling for 150k vs the average of 100k the years previous. I pay about $650 a year on a ~100k assessment.

A few years ago the schools were wanting a tax increase to build a newer better school that really wasn't needed. Tax increase did not pass so they raised everybody's home value the amount they needed to build the school and did it anyways. I have moved and still think they are crooks. They has specified builders contributing to the campaign to raise tax money so they could build this school. They did not accept bids from local contactors so I have to assume there was some cherry picking and pocket filling going on there. I hate politics as it is so corrupt most of the time you have to assume it is until proven otherwise. Just like going to court for a speeding ticket you are guilty and have to prove your innocence. Not the way it is supposed to be.

I'm sure the property taxers love to see insanely inflated housing prices.

Isn't NH a 2 horse town with few residents ?
Just kidding. ☺

$7000 is a good trade off for a better quality of life.

The Northeast Kingdom has been dying for decades now-- factories closing, paper mills going away, about the only thing left now is service jobs and that related to tourism. If you think northern VT is bad, northern NH, Coos county is a basket case. I grew up in Caledonia County, still have family there that ask me when I'm moving back. Not anytime soon-- after I left, I discovered what real life was! Would make a great place for retirement however if you can stand the 6 months of winter!

Totaly agree. The Northeast Kingdom is dying. Yet it is the most beautiful and the last strong hold on what Vermont use to be like.

This tells you how bad it can get. Starting January 1 Vermont will use our tax dollars to give people from out of state $10,000 to move to Vermont. People are leaving. Young people are leaving. INSTEAD of Vermont using this to create jobs to KEEP people from leaving.

It is getting hard to sell your home because of the high property taxes. Example 1,500 SF home on the lake lot size 100 x 150 was paying $1,600 a year twenty years ago is now paying $15,000 a year (not a type O)

Owner trying to sell the house for $289,000 a steal but cannot get it because of the taxes. Word has it that 2 people here are filling a lawsuit that it is unconstitutional how Vermont funds education.

Vermont is losing it's tax base by people running not walking out of Vermont and people not moving here BECAUSE of the high taxes. Kind of ironic don't you think.

Vermont seems to be following the Post Office strategy. (People aren't using mail anymore and we are losing revenue so we will raise the price of stamps to make up for it. )

It hasn't worked before and it won't work now.

Agree PimTac.

Worked outside all summer staining the logs and redoing the deck. Now working inside staining / modifying hoping to GET OUT. With the taxes and the -40 temperatures enough is enough. Will I get what I believe my home is worth, well I will try and sell it myself and all I need is 1 rich person from out of state with lots of money that has to have it. Looking at the West coast of Oregon.

Are you looking at the coast in particular or the west side of Oregon? Beautiful country. I've been through there many times and we vacation on the Oregon coast.

My God 15k taxes on 300k property . If I remember right we had a conflict 240 some years ago over that kind of crap . Lower taxes bring in more revenue , been proven over and over .

PimTac coast in particular. Was there last year in October. Loved it. South of Portland to gold beach. In between those city's along the coast. Low property taxes.

Oh yea.Lower taxes bring in more revenue , All the numbers are public information. Vermont never met a tax they did not love. There use to be a saying (as Maine goes so goes Vermont. Now it's as California goes so goes Vermont. Also people who own property here and are from another state pay 1-2 % more in taxes.
