I had some warranty work done on the transmission on my 2008 mazda 3. With the work they did they had to refill the transmission. I believe they replaced a "shift speed sensor" anyway I noticed when I checked the dipstick the fluid they replaced in the trans is not red. I know for a fact it was red and it was factory filled. I believe the right fluid is type mv (m5) the oil in it now is a gold color could that be mercon v? If so how much damage can happen to this 5 speed auto with the wrong fluid? It is still under factory warranty and it does seem to shift fine. Should I be worried or just leave it? Thanks!

You might ask the dealer what fluid they put in it. Mercon V is also red. Most all ATF is red.

Maybe they put some type of synchromesh fluid or gear oil in it.

M5 is red. a little dark, not super pinkish like Mercon V. take it back and yell at them. if they dont do anything ask to talk to their district rep.

Have a 2005 Mazda 3s 4 speed auto and when I checked the fluid when new it was not red. It is Mazda MV fluid and if I recall it was amber in color.

Leave it. But this transmissions tend to run a little hot and had some early issues hopefully resolved by now. Start a maintenance program(drain/refills) with a compatible ATF and keep driving.

UnDummy...I know some of the earlier JATCO units ran hot, but the 5 speed ATX in the newer 3's is the Ford FNR5. My impression is that this unit ran much cooler.

My experience is that drain and fills look good. Color is perfect. I'm using Castrol Import MV for my maint. plan.

Mazda MV/FNR5 fluid is not found except at the dealer. Amsoil ATF and Castrol Import MV are good subs. I believe the new M1 ATF is also spec'd for this transmission.

Just my input/experience.

I didn't have a chance to call today but they did not bill out any ATF on the receipt. I assumed under warranty they don't biill for ATF. I do have a bottle of the mazda mv and it is definitely red and not amber. I bought the bottle when I first bought the car just to have it just in case and that was about a year ago. I think I might just leave it. It actually shifts very smooth but I'm still going to call to find out what they actually put in. I have a feeling they are going to lie like most dealer service advisors do. Thanks for all your responses I will post once I talk to them.

I wouldn't worry about it, since you have many years of warranty left. But I'd probably inquire about the color and make sure it's normal.

I did 2 drain and refills on my 07 Mazda 3 with Mobil 1 ATF. Changed it out at 5500 miles, and again at 8500 miles. Now have 18000 miles on car. I would use the Mobil 1 brand with 100% confidence. Very excellent shifts in all temperatures.
Drained almost a full 4 quarts at each change.
