ekpolk, thanks for the explination on the "B" setting.

Maybe you mentioned it before, but what tire pressures are you running?

Jeez, Polk, this stuff is starting to look like the tech papers Grumman used to send out to the ship for our beloved A6Es..

You sure you're not an engineer? This stuff is starting to look like a little beyond the common layman's understanding..

Not an engineer, but as you know, I was an EA-6B guy for many years (and I did not stay at a Holiday Inn last night...). Perhaps my Prowler background is a part of why I enjoy working through the technical stuff on this car.

On the MXV4s, I'm presently running 40F/38R, though I'm finding that a bit firm for my taste. I've gone as high as 42/40, but the ride was, for me, totally unacceptable. I'm going to start backing them down, both for ride, and because other Prius owners have reported oversteer/stability issues with tires substantially above placard pressures. I haven't experienced any problems, but I'm not anxious to discover such problems for myself.

I just set the tires at 42/38 and made my first commute of 72 miles and got 62.8 mpg and only one bar had a green car symbol in it. I think it's careful driving on c/control at 60 mph, but so far so good. Oh, ekpolk, I stayed away from the "B".

If you haven't already, check out priuschat.com -- one of the better Prius sites. Lots of great info to be had there.

Just realized -- duh -- I never really addressed your initial question re oil choice. The 1NZ-FXE is, as is the case with many Toyota models, a very oil-easy engine. It is, however, still spec-ed for 5w30, despite the general move of almost all Toyota engines 06 and newer to 20 wt oils. I suspect 5w-20 would be fine in this engine too, and that Toyota is concerned about some remote issue, but who knows -- 5w30 obviously works great, so why chance a wty fight by experimenting. I'm going to try several. At the moment, I've got regular Syntec 5w30 in mine. I chose it because it's one of the thinnest 30 wt oils presently available (again, 9.7 cSt at 100*, almost a 20 wt itself). You can check Priuschat too on oil, but I think you'll see there's no consensus there -- lots of variation. I'd say just experiment around some and settle in on the choice that fits your cost profile and seems to generate good mpg for you.

Thanks for the info. It's becomming fun seeing what your driving and the conditions do to the mileage and the arrows moving around for the engine and generator.

I've got to say, driving this car has brought back some fun in commuting. The arcade game is good entertainment when stuck in traffic in Los Angles. Trying to work with the hybrid system keeps me occupied enough that I don't mind people cutting me off, so much. I'm focused on the bigger picture, trying to get better mileage and having a system that rewards me for doing it right. I'm sitting at about 225 miles at 60.8 mpg on the insturments. I know it will change with I fill up and calculate the real average, but it's still interesting. I was able to clear through a hugh traffic jam, pulsing and gliding at 85 mpg. This is a lot better than getting ________ed of at everyone around you.
