News12 New Jersey and PQIA are once again pursuing damaging oils on the shelves. The focus this time is on MaxiGuard which is sold extensively in the NY region. In addition to the poor excuse for oil in the bottle, note that the contents are listed as "Net Weight 740 gr"! Not only must liquids be labeled with volume units (e.g. one quart), but 740 grams is well short of a quart.

What I don't get is why the TV reporter is letting MaxiGuard off so lightly. The company has been caught in a total fraud pedaling not even good used but absolute [censored]. And they accept the initial excuse from the company with a promise that they have "cleaned up their act"!

In Michigan the attorney general criminal division arrested four City Petroleum and Star Petroleum officials on felony charges for intentionally selling mislabeled motor oil to retailers.
Why isn't that happening in NJ?

In Montana or Florida they would have been shot dead. Suspicion of theft is just cause there.

But I agree, the company should have been instructed to pay for an independently administered recall of product which would then be recycled, extensive testing of all stock and also pay for future independent testing at the point of bottling.

If you want to be dishonest in business then you need to pay, not the consumer, not regulators and taxpayers or even independent watchdogs, the business and its owners.

I have to assume you've never been here. In NJ, if you know the right people any crime you commit loses an order of magnitude in severity. In NJ, if you have enough money (you don't have to spend it, just have it) any crime you commit loses an order of magnitude in severity unless you injure someone or [censored] off the wrong someone. That's the way it works.

Fraud starts out being seen as not such a big deal because it only harms people who aren't paying attention and is the easiest way for otherwise worthless [censored] to "earn" money and become respectable. Now, if the fraud somehow cuts into the business of some other important person that's different because the person harmed can afford to try to start a public outcry and all bets are off from there on out. That's just how it is around here.

It also might help that anyone buying Maxiguard brand oil is going to vote Democrat regardless of whether or not any laws are enforced. George Norcross himself could buy the company and it nobody would care.

The credit goes to Tom Glenn, who founded and runs PQIA - I'm just an Advisor to PQIA and FOO (Friend of Owner).

It takes time, but PQIA works with regulators, and Weights and Measures is now on to MaxiGuard.
