plus, penz never goes on sale here. canadian tire has a twice a year sale on mobil1, where the give you a 4.4L jug plus a free 1 litre bottle for $29.99 and thats as cheap as any synth comes around here

That is incorrect. Canadian Tire does have sales on Pennzoil Platinum 5w30 and 10w30 on a somewhat regular basis.

The last time PP was on sale at CT, I got two 4.7L/5qt jugs for $24.99 each.

Was it ever determined why PP went from Group V to Group III ? Was there a problem with the Group V or was it a cost thing ?

I suspect a seal compatability problem with the eop. (shrug)

If this was true, the oil would not have been able to get API certification, would it? Just asking.

First, the group III that Pennzoil is using, it's XHVI base stock, is known to be a high performing group III base stock.

This is what I believe. Shell Helix Ultra. Not all GrpIII are alike and I like this the best when studying severe spec's.

It's not PAO and I may want that for a turbo application or crazy drain intervals (spec'd for some BMW-LL, MB, or VW/Audi). M1 "0W40 European" is a stand out here.

BUT, the aggressive marketing bringing sale/rebate prices have brought PP down to a point where cost and performance effective.
