PP or M1 for Mazda turbo

PP on a 5000 mile OCI sounds like a solid choice. get a UOA after one or 2 oil changes and see what they say. i think you have your thinking backwards. don't go with a longer OCI and see if the UOA says you should shorten... go withthe 5K OCI and see if the UOA says its safe to pull it a little longer.

For what it's worth, here is my list of considerations for my speed3 (2.3 DISI) on the next change (I like to push the car):

PP - value for performance
Redline - performance in high heat applications
Schaeffer - don't know much...on the list via recomendation
Valvoline Maxlife - value for performance
Elf - good possibility for fuel dilution resistant oil (lots of DI use)
Motul - racing cred/local availibility @ a good price

BTW - Mazda ISN'T Ford...Ford has a large stake in Mazda and there is quite a bit of sharing (parts, tech, R&D, etc) but they are completely seperate corporate entities.

Ed,

Maxda is Ford and Ford recently moved corporate OCI from 5K normal to 7.5K. I have a 2005 Ford spec's at 5K and I'm staying there.

Not true. Mazda is its own entity. Ford owns 30% of mazda and works WITH them. Ford does not own all of nor control Mazda. Mazda had a 7,500mi OCI before Ford.

CX 7 OC recommendations for dino oil are 5,000 and 7,500. My manual does not state or indicate the turbo is to use the severe OCI automatically. The manual states to use the severe if the vehicle is driven under any of the severe conditions listed and, a turbo engine is not among the list. Anyway blackdiamond, the UOAs will point the way without guessing, I hope. Ed

I just double checked the online owners manual at www.mazdausa.com in the owners section (a cool feature in my opinion) and I found this statement in the turbo charger section:

"Change the engine oil and filter using the turbo engine interval outlined in the maintenance schedule (for your driving condition)."

Here are the reasons listed for following the "Severe" schedule 2:

(1) Repeated short-distance driving
(2) Driving in dusty conditions
(3) Driving with extended use of brakes
(4) Driving in areas where salt or other corrosive materials are being used
(5) Driving on rough or muddy roads
(6) Extended periods of idling or low-speed operation
(7) Driving for long periods in cold temperatures or extremely humid climates

I also noted that it now specifies 5w-20 instead of 5w30 like the hard copy in my car.

I will let Terry do a UOA when I get the oil changed next week and will then re-evaluate going longer than 5,000 miles.

Thanks blackdiamond. Your manual reads the same as my 2007 CX7 manual with the exception that 5w30 is the prefered oil viscosity. Bennyt has a a good plan and is not far from my origional preposal. PP or M1 (5w30) at third oil change and a UOA at 6 or 5 K miles. Guess I'll go for the 5,000 oua first before running longer. I still have reservations when someone says the engine diluts fuel under all driving conditions. Need to see some data to agree with this statement. Thanks to all for your comments and when I get the UOA I wll post it and hopefully we can start a mazda DI UOA list going. becaues PP has the A3/B4 rating and Mobil does not, I will go with PP and forgo my beloved M1 which has served so well for so long. Thanks to all for the good dialog & information exchange. Anyone subscribe to the www.mazda247.com news group forum? Good driving to all. Ed Hayes

Thanks bulwnki: I found the 5 section. I was mistaken about PP meeting the A3 spec for DI engine in the 5w30 viscosity. The PP that meeets the A3 is the 15w50 and NOT the 5w or 10w30 oils darn it. Ed

That IS a bit of a bummer for me as well.

I am waiting on a reply from Mobil as if ANY of their 5w or 10w30 oils are A3 rated. I will let you know when I get a response if I do.

That's what I was thinking. I'm assuming that it's definitly best to stay conservative when it comes to OCI's with a turbo motor.

How much time do you usually spend in boost? Does it get driven hard?

I'm also assuming that since the car more than likely runs pig rich from the factory, that doesn't help with the already present fuel dillution issues.

I've put only 1650 miles since my oil change on April 12th, so it's getting an oil change in October regardless of mileage. These 5 mile drives to work don't add up very quickly...I need to go on a road trip. 3 cases of PP at home waiting!

I'm taking my Speed 3 in tomorrow for an oil change, and passenger rear strut replacement,

You better make sure they swap out BOTH rear struts, otherwise you'll be back to the dealership in no time flat wondering why the car feels "funny."

Interested in what you come up with. I'm also doing a UOA with Terry on the factory fill (for "fun").

I expect I will be going back, but I was told that they can only replace the one making noise. We'll see how it goes.

Well, I had the oil changed today and watched the tech get the oil sample, he handed me the bottle while it was still hot. I'll have it in the mail to Terry in the next couple of days.

I took in Pennzoil 5w30 and my initial impression is that I like it. The seat-of-the-pants-ometer tells me that it is running very very smoothly and the fuel mileage seems to match the Mobil 1 that came out. I can't remember what the Mobil 1 felt like when it was first put in, but the change to new oil sure feels great. Look for a UOA in the near future.
