Howdy, I am trying out Winchester 231 in my .45apc, and it appears to leave a small amount of yellow residue. Anyone know what it is? Thanks in advance and have a good one!

Probably a taggant mandated by the ATF to identfy the powder. Does it burn completely or does it leave some unburned residue.
What load are you using?
I'm running 5gr with a 200gr SWC

Seems to burn completely, just noticed a very small amount of yellow particles. Cases are clean indicating no blow back. I've started with 5.1grs with 230gr ldrn. Chrono 730fps, average deviation 11.8, not bad for first run.

Just unburned powder. The heat changes the color. 231 is lousy powder, dirty and smokey with lead bullets. Try some Hodgson Clays or Tite-Group. Much better and your standard deviation with the tite group will be around 5fps. The ATF does not mandate taggets for smokeless powder, another internet myth.

WDP, thanks for the advice. After using Unique for years 231 is clean! I'll check those other powders out.

I always loved 231. 231 for my .45 and light target loads, 296 for my mag loads. Never did notice the yellow residue. Not the first good thing I have heard about Titegroup either. Itching to try that when my current stocks run out. After trying Varget in my rifles I am slowly coming around to Hodgdon powders.

Punisher...Same with me..I've used 231 and 296 with great results for years! Also use many other powders as well..all with good results. If you shoot heavy magnum rifle (300 win.mag.300 Rem.ultra mag. etc.) try Reloader 25..fantastic speed/accuracy with no signs of pressure problems...good stuff.

+1 for the Reloader 25 from Alliant, I use it in my 300 RUM with excellent results...I get good results using Bullseye in my .45, getting 900fps using 5.0gr under 230 gr LRN..

Speaking of residue, has anyone fired the Winchester 38 Special 130 grain FMJ ammo (Q4171).

I went to the range yesterday and shot these rounds in my S&W 586. While a hot load (like a P++ round) and accurate, residue was very pronounced.

Shooting this load reminded me of an article on experimental (internal ballistic) gun research in which diesel fuel was used
as a propellant. Lots of soot and residue.

The residue could be from the brand of primer you are using. Try a different brand and see if it goes away. I use 231 and Federal primers in both 38spl and 45acp. I have never noticed any colored residue like you are describing. Just a thought.

I've used 231 for some time in 45ACP. Never noticed anything yellow but it is a dirty powder. Cheap though, or at least used to be.
