This is about the 3rd. Puro. classic oil filter that I have had to replace due to a leaky gasket, since my Toyota's oil filter is in your face and easily accessible I just noticed this one sprung a leak yesterday and was leaking down the block, when I spun it off, once again the rubber gasket was almost even with the metal lip of the filter. am I putting them on to tight? I remove/install them by hand because it's so easily accessible. Thanks {} oh and about 3,000 miles on this filter.

I opened up a Purolator classic and a Fram and the Fram (high mileage?) actually looked to have a much thicker gasket.

Sounds too tight to me. OIl the gasket and then about half a turn beyond when the gasket contacts the boss on the block. I have been using Puro on Gen 4s for years. The only one which ever leaked was a Fram, and that was the reason I switched.

Exactly. I wouldn't be using them in the first place, especially after they kept leaking. I had the same car as you that I sold last year and had no issues with Wix filters leaking.

Add that to the torn media reports, no thanks Purolator.

In my infinite wisdom I bought 5 of them because I didn't want to step foot into Walmart for as long as possible.

I had a stash of them too, I returned them. Why bother is what I said.

Use a Denso. They have a stop-torque feature that prevent overtightening. You turn them on by hand until they stop rotating and the calibrated o ring seal distortion is achieved.

I always hear of oil filters leaking because they are to loose , the gasket wasn't torn, just worn down even with the lip of the filter itself. I am throwing the other ones in the trash, to late to return them anyway.

I'd try and return them, maybe someone will give you store credit. If not then you can pitch them if you want.

That is AMAZING... marketing...!

Calibrated o ring seal distortion .... right.

Every filter has that if you follow the install instructions...

Ed

It wasn't around until apx. 3,000 miles into OCI, so I just changed the oil anyways, it's an OCD thing thanks to bitog.

IVE HAD MOST ALL spin-on can FLAT GASKETS LEAK WITH MODERN OILS; PUROLEAKER, DELCO, WIX.
Popular, current: Toyota Subaru and Nissan filter spec/apps are same for most non turbo engines.
I try to use cans with P-gaskets now - NEVER any gasket leaks.

See my Honda S2000 filtec as a great filter for those looking to upgrade. If I could get the Subaru black ToyoRoki I'd use those.
