I just got a poor UOA with Silicon and other high wear #'s this time and I switched to STP since the previous UOA. I have since heard of one other such complaint. Wonder if anyone here has had the same issue ?
Not in particular, no. But I'm curious. Was the previous UOA also performed with a filter that started out fresh, or is this comparing a slightly dirty filter to a new STP? Where was yours made? Did anything else change? There are lots of other factors too... I wouldn't think the paper vs paper filter swap alone would create THAT big a difference by itself unless there was a problem with it or poor sealing.
Even if it is the filter which I doubt, or something like the poor fit...
How can you possibly generalize the whole brand since STP imports the filters from around the world made by many different manufacturers.
From what I've seen so far STP sells quality products at attractive prices.
Fit and seal on the system from what I could find seemed ok. This is 5.4L Ford Expy cone filter. All other UOAs postd here I notice less than half the silicon #s than I got with the STP in there (similar mileage). I just put in a Motorcraft filter yesteday and the intake noise is definitely lower. Media seems a tag thicker on the MC filter. I could not find any damage on the STP filter, all the glue spots seem ok. This is a funny filter design where they have to glue every media fold on the end section facing outside. There is no end cap per se on it, just a cone in the middle part.
Not bashing STP here just trying to see if there's a trend or not. Tnx JR
Not that I've heard. Most people seem to like them well enough for the money, regardless of where theirs was made. Maybe you just got a bad one, it is an inexpensive brand that comes from all over the world. Not all of them are going to be perfect. However, I doubt any of the STPs for that application are going to be as good as the Motorcraft. If Purolators are significantly cheaper, you could check some of those out in the future. Otherwise you could stick with the MC. *shrugs*

I think it depends on the filter model. The STP filter that fits my Toyota seems very high quality, and the silicon was 8ppm in 10K miles on my last UOA. The filter for my Mustang however didn't look as good as the Purolator or Wix filters I've seen so I didn't buy one...
