Poor gas mileage with shell gas, is this normal

Mileage setbacks from brand-to-brand are a mystery to me. I love what Shell offers in their cleaning add-packs. But I get my best gas mileage using the cheapest Detroit-area brand of Speedway. Sometimes I believe the MPG advantage is a result of more pure gas & less cleaning additives.

So really,. we are all in a pickle when we fil-up.
Do we want a gas that cleans best?
or
Do we want a gas that gives best mileage?

As a result, I purchased a credit card to both places (Shell/Speedway)..... then I alternate places when I fill-up.

My pickle is compounded (that just sounds bad).

I require higher AKI fuel (92 is the target), and you can't get it without these cleaners. I could, in theory, live without them since I've started using FP60 (and have some new FP3000 waiting) but you can't buy premium without getting that station's whoop-de-doo trademarked additive pack. Anyone know a brand sold in southern ontario that offers 91-92 AKI without ethanol or unnecessary detergent addfitives?

esso ,
Well I filled up 50litres with esso regular last week,
And so far I got an extra 60 kms per half a tank fill up ?,
strange . I have never filled up with esso gas before.
Looks like I am going to start to see if this continues.

shell v-power 93 octane seems to give me LESS mileage/performance than Chevron Supreme 93 octane. No real proof just seat of the pants/butt-dyno stuff.

Have you tried using a lower octane? You might be able to use around 89 or lower with the addition of Fuel Power.

Valid question. My vehicle calls for 91/92 with 89 as an absolute minimum. Performance is just as important to me as fuel economy - possibly more so (within reason). Some time I might let the tank get down and partially fill with 89 as an experiment. I really don't relish the thought of a full tank of potential retarded timing. I generally top off my tank frequently keeping it near full. You never know when the next blackout, snowstorm, rail strike or refinery fire might strike.

My annual mileage is probably half of the general average, so this is still only every couple of weeks for me.

I may just switch to straight Esso for a couple of tanks and see how it goes from my local stations. It might also be time to actually call the customer service numbers for all of my local retailers and inquire about the composition of their premium-grade fuel. This is something I've never bothered to do in the past.

Gas milage may not have as much to do with brands as with pump calibration. Since buying an 06 Denali, which shows fuel consumption, we have found pumps can vary as much as 3 gallons on a 20 gal fillup. Pumps at the same station vary. We keep track of which pumps give us the most accurate readings. We also watch calibration dates on the pumps, as pumps in our area can go 3yrs between calibration. We noticed a big improvement at one station after their pumps were calibrated last Dec. There is an allowable error as specified in state laws. We feel we have found a good pump if it shows no more than 1 gal more than our trip computer on a 20 gal fill.

My mileage observations are based on my onboard computer readings (real time and aggregate over miles travelled) and a sense of how much fuel (gauge or station pump) is consumed during my travels of known distance.

I don't care how much fuel the pump says I bought and that's not responsible in any way for my observations of V-Power vs. Esso.

Yes, my OBC readings may not be accurate, but when I go from 10L/100km to 8L/100km by filling up somewhere different, and back to 10L/100km on the next fillup it's pretty easy to tell. That's going from 23.5 USmpg to 29.5 USmpg.

With my Tundra I seemed to get better MPG at the local 76 station than I did at the Shell. I never bothered to track it carefully enough to verify the difference, but I suspect it was 1-2 MPG different. I generally run the 76 fuel because it is a bit cheaper and they have the old style pumps that work better.

Great tread, I leave near a Shell which is near a Walmart station (Minstar or Mirstar something like that).

I've been getting better MPG with Walmart. Being 3 cents cheaper a gal and getting better MPG, I always get this feeling that my engine is getting gummed up. I know they are suppose to add fed minimum additives, but you never know.

Some day I'll pull the plugs and see if they are collecting ash. I'm sure they are not MMT free.

I just registered to give some insight, I hope. I'm an "old" Shelll Oil guy. Some of our training was done in the motor fuel research wing at the lab. The Shell guys said that Chevron or Texaco was THE gas on the market (this was 12 years ago). Whe I ran Shell (I tried to be brand loyal) in my Bronco II it rattled and pinged. When it ran Chev or Tex, it didn't and got 3 to 5 more mpg. To this day I only run Chevron and have no issues. Any old Shell motor research guys out there to bear this out?

Also thanks for a great site, I've been a lurker for a while.

Over 40 years of using Shell premium from the same neighborhood station I've seen amazing to poor mileage from the same grade of gas. Considering the volume of business this station does I wouldn't think water would be a problem.

My bike ran real good on the 93 octane shell but always got at least a few MPG less than when filled up at another station. This was just filling up & riding pretty much steady speed on secondary roads with both types. Mentioned this to a guy I worked with & he said his truck did the same thing. At the time shell said 'no ethanol' while the other stations had '10% ethanol' posted on their pumps. The shell I bought from had plenty of business & if it had been a water problem it wouldn't have run that good. Maybe the pump wasn't calibrated right?

I have noticed the same thing with the 87 octane. I have my best mileage ever with shell gas, but also some my worst tanks, seems to be very inconsistent. with other gas such as conoco/phillips my mileage is much more consistent.

I have noticed that I get lower MPG with Shell V-Power. I was getting around 15.9 MPG. I am now getting 18.1 with FP3000 and run of the mill mid-grade. I assumed it was ethanol content, but perhaps I am wrong on that.
